I have just recently bought a maxtor ata 100 PCI card. I followed Thier instructions, on how to install, and all that nice stuff. Well anyways, after following the instuctions, the last step was, turn off the pc. and connect your hardrive onto it and start it up again. Well after doing that, i found out that the device manager in windows 2000 has a problem with the card. It gives me The Device Could Not Be Started (Code 10), Well, i though maybe dumb me, installed the wrong drivers, well after searching and all, and 8 drivers later, they all gave me the same problem.. And im just completely stumped now.

With Win2K, you don't usually get any warning about an HDD controller problem. Usually, you get boot failure. Is the boot drive on the Maxtor?

What device drive is listed in the SCSI section of Device Manager?

I would load the correct Maxtor drivers on a floppy and use the repair process. Boot from the CD and press F6 right off. Supply setup with the storage drivers when prompted. Continue on and select Repair > Fast Repair. I would also consider changing the Win2K HAL (system driver) to Standard PC. You do this by pressing F5 before pressing F6 (when you see "Setup is inspecting hardware..."). You will then be prompted to select a HAL. Select Standard PC.

When you arrive back in Windows, go to Control Panel > Power Options > APM and enable APM.

Apply Service Pack 2 right away.

Well in win2k i got no unusaly controller problems. And my bios and all dectects it, and no the boot drive isnt on the maxtor card. It is on the onboard channels. Im adding a new 60 gig harddrive to it.

And It is listed as a WIn2000 MAXTOR ULTRA ATA 100 IDE CONTROLLER.

I did swich my HAL to Standard PC. But the WIN2k bootable cd is damaged and the a certain file is corrupt. So it could not install the drivers.
What is APM ?

APM = Advanced Power Management

It pre-dates ACPI and allows Windows to have some control over BIOS for automatic shutdowns and such.

I wouldn't put anything critical on there 'till you fix this. Is the 60BG actually connected?

This info was contained in a Windows tips & tricks I get by email.
Q. Why do I receive an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error when I set up a
Promise Ultra100 storage controller card on a Windows 2000 or Windows
NT 4.0 system?

A. As vendors create new types of hardware, Microsoft attempts to add
the drivers into the next version of Windows. For example, Windows XP
natively supports Ultra ATA-100 drivers, Win2K natively supports ATA-
66 drivers, and NT 4.0 doesn't support either out of the box.

To add ATA-100 driver support to Win2K and NT 4.0, you must treat the
Promise Ultra100 card as if it were a SCSI controller, even though
it's an IDE card. To configure the driver, perform the following
steps:

1. Go to the Tech Support section of the Promise Web site
( http://www.promise.com ), and download the appropriate driver for
the Ultra100 card.
2. Extract the downloaded zip file to a 3.5" disk, which will
create a txtsetup.oem file in the 3.5" disk's root directory.
3. Start the Windows installation.
4. When the system prompts you to install a third-party RAID or
SCSI controller, press F6.
5. Point the installer to the txtsetup.oem file on your 3.5" disk;
the system will continue with the installation.

In general, whenever you get an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error, always
check to ensure that Windows supports your disk controller; otherwise,
you'll need to install the controller driver manually.
