I have a mitsumi 24x cdrom and it doesn't always read cds. I put the cds in another cdrom sony and it reads them fine. I would like to clean the lens but have no idea of how to go about it. Do I need to take it apart or can it be done from the outside. I tried one of the lens cleaning cds didn't make a difference. Any suggestions.

Seems like your CD har errors. Every manufacturer uses it's own error correction technique. And your Mitsumi is not the best between them. I recommend TEAC or ASUS. Try this.

I have as I said another cdrom, actually 2 one a sony and the other a mitsumi, both these read the cd's just fine. I have 2 mitsume drives bought at about the same time that have both started reading cds intermittently. Again, how do I clean the thing from outside or take it apart. Any suggestions without buying a new one.

See in marketplaces. There is a bottle with an air inside under a high pressure. Buy one of them, and blow the whole air inside the open tray of a CD-ROM.
The another way is to use your mouth.
But here you may damage your CD-ROM, because not the all dust is going out. The part stays in yout CD-ROM and may sit down on your parts causing troubles.
But in such way you should not go inside your CD-ROM.

Thanks, I was just surprised that 2 cdroms would start going out at approximately the same time. Will try and clean as best as I can. Again, thanks.

Do the air thing & then put one of those "CD Lens Cleaner" CD's, it's basically a CD that has a little brush on the surface & will clean the lens of the CD-ROM

I also have a 24x CD-ROM that sometimes doesn't read CD-R's (depending on the brand)....it makes like a clicking sound....cleaning doesn't help....it is just a bad brand of reader...
