If anyone has a suggestion:

I have an ABIT BE6 mobo with a Creative Encore 12x DVD as master on IDE0 with an internal 100mb Zip as slave, IDE1 is connected to a Ricoh 7040A CDRW. There are two 20GB Maxtor HD as masters on the two Highpoint 360 ATA66 buses.

I am running Windows ME (wife likes it...) and have 512MB of PC133 (Xerox) installed. The Processor is a PIII 700.

My problem is that I can access a CD once, whether I open the drive from My Computer or Explorer does not matter. It does not matter which drive I use. After it is opened once I cannot read any CD, in either drive until I have rebooted the machine. It does always show them as having 0 bytes used, with 648MB free after the first access.

The rest of the boat anchor is as follows:
Gainward GeForce 2MX 400
3Com 3C905 Nic
Creative 56K ISA controller based Modem
Centronics parallel port CF card reader
Logitech USB Optical mouse
IE6
Norton Corporate 7.5:(

Take the DVD and put in the same cable as the CD-RW and see what happens. Leave the ZIP on IDE1 by itself. That is probably where the conflict lies.

Okay,I have moved the Zip drive to the master position on the primary IDE with the DVD as slave on the secondary.

And it didn't help.

Try this?!?!?!

I think I have ran across this before. Try disconnecting power and cable off the zip drive. Boot the machine. Does the cd drives work? post and let me know......:D

Sorry about the delay, I am working and am therefore geographically separated from my machine. However I do know that without the zip drive installed (physically and no software) the problem gets less severe, but still happens after 2 to 5 CD reads.

I did some research this evening, and Iomega suggests selecting none for the IDE channel (M/S) that the drive is hooked to. Not sure if that is even remotely connected to my problem, most likely not seeing as how the thing doesn't work that much better when the zip drive is sitting on the floor somewhere.

 Well how is this? I turned on the box this afternoon, and everything is fine. I have restarted it 6 times, and everything now works. I just don't get it! Anyway, I guess the point is moot for now, thanks for the ideas.
