i hear that it is possible to un-compress dvd mpeg2 data onto two or more cd's for back-up, is this true? (blank dvd's are way too expensive at the moment!!)

You can rip the dvd onto your computer and convert it to vcd, then burn it onto a cd with Easy CD Creator or Nero.
Just curious, do you actuall have a DVD-R drive? If so, you can buy 3 packs of blank DVD's for $20. It seems expensive, but the quality will be better, the process is easier, and you won't have a single movie scattered into 4 or 5 parts.

You can, by ripping DVDs, then compressing them into DivX files to fit onto a single CD-R disk.

But I don't do it/support it in any way because it's illegal.

its not illegal to copy a dvd so long as:

1. you own the original disc.

2. you don't sell or rent out the copies to anyone and generally keep them to yourself.

it's called fair use and it allows you to make backups of any media you own a copy of in case of damage to the original.

there are guides at www.vcdhelp.com

Why not put your PC's idle time to good use by downloading the seti@home client HERE (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/windows.html) and then joining the Sysopt.com Users 2002 Team HERE (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/cgi?cmd=team_lookup&name=Sysopt.com+Users+2002)

Plenty of info on DVD ripping on www.doom9.net.

There is nothing illegal about making a legitimate backup copy of a DVD or any other recording that you legally own. It's called fair-use.

MPAA and RIAA are trying their hardest to eliminate fair-use. The DMCA was the first step. SSSCA is the second step, but it's not too late to stop that one. Write your congressman and voice strong opposition to such onerous legislation.

If you try to rip a DVD, keep quiet about it, since MPAA is litigating vigerously about circumvention of their encryption.

MPAA/RIAA = Filthy greedy swine.

I agree with vibe666's first rule. Unless you have the original dvd, DON'T RIP IT!!
