ok i dont get it.

i recently put together an athlon xp 1700 with an abit kg7 mobo. when i download some self extracting exe's (AOL IM, 3dmark 2001) i get a corrupt file error. what could be causing this? i havent overclocked just yet. ive tried diff OS's (w2k, win98se, win xp) diff hard drives, any ideas? anyone else have a prob like this? could it possibly be the cpu? i tried a HD with some stuff already on it, and AOL IM installed just fine. when i run windows update, i get file errors as well. i put in the SB audigy setup disc, and it says bad disc image or something like that. any help would be very much appreciated.

Is every file you download corrupt? If some are OK, it's probably not a problem with the data cable.

But in any case you still should use an 80-wire cable if your drive is ATA-66 or higher.

not every file, but it seems that if the exe was packaged by certain installing software, that may have something to do with it. because acrobat reader works fine, and every other file that looks like that icon that i try, but every one that looks like aol IM does not work. and yes im using 80 wire cables now, but before i was using the cables from my old comp, so i'm fairly sure they work fine...

well in anycase.. try doing a virus ccheck after upgrading the virus definations.

also from what i underdstand its not just a problem with your downloads

i put in the SB audigy setup disc, and it says bad disc image or something like that

so maybe your windowsinstaller setup was messed up with something... and then u installed it on everyinstallation
