Has anyone else seen this? It's called VMWare. It allows you to run one operating system inside another at the same time. Right now I have RedHat Linux 6.1 running inside Windows NT. Both OS's are running at the same time and I can see both at once or maximize either screen. I can even cut-and-paste from one to the other. Each OS has it's own IP, just as if they were separate machines. Incredible. No more dual-booting or drive swapping. Check this out!

Be sure to follow the directions carefully. I tried to wing it the first time and messed up.

Yes, it is an incredible program. I used it for a short time on two occasions and am about to set up my system again with it (thanks for the reminder) http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.
I did a search for it here and posts go back a fair amount of time but there is little indepth discussion so far. Either it is flawless, hush-hush, or not many people are using it. All three seem far fetched for such a great program.

I was wondering about having two OS's. This makes it much easier! Maybe I will get W2k afterall. I wanted it because it was better with Photoshop and other apps. I wanted to keep Win98 because of games. Now I have an answer!

I've been raving about vmware ever since I first used it. One of the best software programs I have ever seen (if I can get my java porn downloader debugged, that may change....).
I ran a VMWARE linux browser against an NT IIS website accessing an Oracle DB. Proved N-tiered on one box, kinda sorta...
I've posted before of VMWare, it's one of the most amazing appz i've ever seen !!!
There is some peacefull feelings to install linux and trying to understand and learn it, Without having to be worried about Your pic's appz etc in windows getting lost. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Anyone tried gaming in your virtual OS? I had it installed on a PII 266 and the lag was tremedous. 266 is the min req though. I am going to play with it now tha tI have Win2000 again. Hoepfully it will do better with a processor that is 4X as fast and with 3X the RAM.
Thanks

Ok, I just installed Win98SE into my Win2K system. Works great. I am not sure how it will be for gaming. I have 192MB RAM dedicated to it and it is still slightly laggy. Great program though. Besides games, I can see no apps that I would not use on it. The verdict on games is still out.

Ok OK
I have just two questions,
1. Does it really allow you to still use the other O/S if one freezes.
2. Can you install w2k twice.
Just one other thing, say i have both installs of w2k open can i lock one or both, as i have setup my own account and one for everyone else and we are constately switching between accounts, which gets annoying waiting for it to save settings and so forth, it would be really good if i could do this.

Sorry, to expand on my short answer...Win2K can be installed into VMWARE and I have crashed Win98 in VMWare in my Win2K system and all was fine outside the Virtual world.
