There is a website called www.cdfreaks.com You will find anything that you want to know about...cds. The info is priceless

I've got an AOpen 40x, had it about 6 months now with no problems. Fast, quiet, and reads CD-Rs fine.
Originally purchased 32x, it was lousy. Noisy & wouldn't read half of what I tried, both CD-Rs and originals. Had it two days, took back & vendor said they'd had problems with those so I went with the 40.
Come to think of it, most everyone I know that has a 32, has problems regardless of maker. Anybody got a clue why?
