I have a Yamaha CRW8824EZ (IDE). Is there any reason I can't use it as my only CD-ROM drive?

You can still copy cds, although it will take longer with just a cd-rw. The extra use will shortent he life of the drive. That is the only drawback. Dave Warthog 11-21-2000, 05:08 AM I do. I would just spend the little extra for a CD-ROM drive so that you can CD to CD copies on the fly..... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif giant69 11-21-2000, 10:58 AM I use my DVD as my primary CD. Only use the burner for burning...duh..But my burn software (nero 5.0)doesnt support copying on the fly. I have to copy an image from the burner to my HD back to the burner. I figure by the time that Ive "worn out" my burner, (approx. 800 sessions to date)my puter will be junk anyways, so why worry? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Jonty 11-21-2000, 01:48 PM I agree with NDC, for a few quid, sorry, dollars more, you can buy an ordinary CDROM drive, then fix up a switch as explained by NDC in this thread: http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum2/HTML/009411.html randy48 11-21-2000, 02:37 PM Definitely use a CD reader! They're cheap and will make your burner last longer! My burner is in it's 3rd box and still going strong! I only use it for burning roms! darrelld 11-21-2000, 02:46 PM I've been through 3 cd-roms, and still on my first burner. I'd much rather be spending $30 on a cd-rom than $300 on a burner. Nero does on the fly for me Giant. [This message has been edited by darrelld (edited 11-21-2000).] otheos 11-22-2000, 12:45 AM Sorry but Nero does CD2CD copy. Are you sure your CDROM is capable of reading data fast enough for your burner? bhess 11-22-2000, 10:17 PM I would think that the drawback would be having to wait for the burner to read a cd that you just put in. Mine takes about 10 sec or more. For a cheap cd check out staples. Then go here http://www.bigbigsavings.com/bystore.php3?m=120 for coupons. SysOpt.com
