Do you know a good psychriatrist?
i have lots of problems with printers, they make you smile.
If you had a new hard drive, did the person who installed it just copy everytning over.?
Or was the new HDD reinstalled with op system from scratch?
it will also be helpful if you could tell us what system you have,
cpu, op system, what the new drive is, memory etc as they all could play a part.
If you know how, me being a true male MCP, i would recommend a complete reinstall of the operating system, having wiped the new disk first, and then installing everything else one at a time, leaving the printer to last.
Need more detail to help further. PS and its a Saturday, everyones out getting sloshed, except the few of with more control or no money.

Right, I think you might have done this, but bear with me as it justmight be subtly different, and if it works don't ask me why cos I don't know.
Do your removal thingy in this order.
Go to control panel->add/remove software
and remove all HP stuff you can find.
Then go settings printers and remove your printer by deleting it.
now do a search on your pc like this hp*.* and see if any files show up. Be careful here because you are going to delete all those that you suspect belong to the printer. like hpdskjt.drv
Please look at the folder these files belong to because some other programs may start the files with hp, like Harry Potter for instance, but if what you find belongs to the printer, delete it.
Now you are as clean as you can get without reformating your hard drive.
You now have two approaches.
One restart and let windows find the printer. Cancel automatic install and run the setup program you got from the net with the new drivers.
If it don't find a printer, just run the set up program.
reboot and hopefully it works.
Approach two is just to use the add printer option and go through the windows setup options, pointing to where your new drivers live when asked.
If these don't work, I know upgrading your operating system will for some reason. I am not asking you to fork out any money, just get a copy of win2k or xp from your freinds. I have had many a battle with USB and parallel printers and they do drive you bonkers, that why you don't get many responses, every situation is usually different and no logic explains why they work.Becuase they should anyway.
Try these out and post back how you got on.
