I'm running windows 98 right now. I had windows xp pro, but couldn't run it anymore because i couldn't activate it. regardless of that, i didn't uninstall it, i just installed 98 instead. it was fine for a while but now all of a sudden when i boot up my computer on the computer diognostic screen, it says INCIFICIENT MEMORY, and it asks me to hit any key to continue.

why does it ask taht???

This often indicates that your "Conventional" memory may be too low. When the system is booting press the F8 key to get a boot menu. Select "Boot to Command Prompt Only" and then type MEM at the prompt. This will give a reading of all memory and total and available "Conventionsl" memory. The TOTAL "Conventional" memory maximum is 640K. If the available "Conventional" memory is less than about 580K type MEM /C and this will itemise what is loaded into what memory areas.

You might then see a problem with TSR (Terminate and Stay Ready) programs being loaded into conventional memory space as opposed to higher memory areas. Most often the problem can be traced back to eirther your autoexec, bat or config.sys file. Have a look at these files. Firstly rename these files and reboot. win95 onwards really don't need these files and they are mainly used to load DOS compatibility drivers. Try and see.

You might also want to look at your win.ini file to see what is being loaded at startup. The "run=" instruction is the one to look for" To gget at the win.ini file for a look, just type Edit c:\windows\win.ini at the command prompt and have a look.

Hope this helps.
