I headed over to both sites to compare a top-of-the line system between the two. I picked Dell for its good prices, Alienware for its good systems. Here's the match-up.
Both systems had equivalent monitors, hard drives, and other base components. Both machines had 256 Meg of RAM, the same software packages, and identical mice and keyboards (at least in terms of cost).
Final tally?
Dell: $3,279
Alienware: 2,974.
This is for a 1.5 Ghz P4 against a 1.2 Ghz Athlon. Actually the P4 price suprises me as being low--the Gateway came out several hundred dollars more expensive.
But even from an OEM, the Athlon rules supreme.
