What's this file's story? I've searched the board and found various references, but not enough to get a true understanding of it.

I'd probably leave it well enough alone...but the fact that Speed Disk has it as "unmovable" just makes it too intriguing to ignore.

not sure what it does myself. I have three copies on my HD, one in cookies, one in temp. internet, and one in apllication data\microsoft/internet explorer. 2 of these get deleted on a regular basis with no ill affects. Cookies and temp internet are wiped via dos and deltree about once a week. Usually after a week the Index.dat in temp. internet is about a meg in size.

It appears to be a file that indexes cookies. Not sure.

Check this, this is it: http://www.winmag.com/fixes/ie/iecache2.htm http://www.windows-help.net/bbs/Forum2/HTML/007578.html http://www.cookiecentral.com/board/messages/7003.html

index.dat is found in the same folder as your cookies, so I would assume it is related.

File Ferret has an AdvertCacheindex.dat as well in its cache folder in Temp. Indexing cookis is what I have always believed as well.

Cheers!
