Which is better: IBM or Maxtor?
What is the difference/which is better: Ultra DMA/66 or Ultra ATA/100? (DMA is more expensive, why?)
Thanks!

No contest. IBM.
The IBM is afaster, quieter drive that is much less likely to break down. I have had to RMA several Maxtor drives. Also, the Maxtors DO NOT like to be overclocked. I have had data corruption with overclocking on Maxtors and it is not fun.

Wart-10, I have a
Maxtor 13.5@7200RPM and on it there is some markings->>
IBM FRU Number ---___
IBM P/N ---___
and
IBM Warranty Void if Removed
so, Is the drive made by Maxtor and used in IBM machines or
Made by IBM and sold as a Maxtor ??
I guess the latter.
I got laughed at in here when I got the truck load of IBM ATA/100 20gb drives for $83.50 shipped cause they were 5400 rpm.
Who is laughing NOW http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
I think the Quantum 7200 might be as quick as the IBM 7200 but it's much, much louder.
It clicks loudly during write and when spooling up or cutting off the thing sounds like a Jet engine,, I Like that part, sounds impressive http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Get whatever 7200 or ATA66/100 drive that the budget allows, providing that the rest of the machine does not demand a super-fast drive.. i.e. 1.0ghz+ Processor @ 133+FSB

I had a maxtor 13.6GB drive that I traded even swap for a IBM 9.1GB 7200. I could not believe the performance gain! I hated the maxtor, it was slow & noisy. I will ONLY buy IBM hard disks from now on!

IBM-Got 4 of 'em. Never had a glitch-even from the 5 year old. Very quiet too. :-)

When you raise the fsb, you raise the speed of all items on the bus. IDE runs at teh same speed as the PCI (33MHz) and is set by a choice of dividers in the BIOS (1/3 or 1/4). It is not benefitial to OC your hdd, it is a side effect of OCing your fsb.
