This is the second time a cretin-troll has tried to disrupt our forums recently.

http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum17/HTML/001703.html

I have reason to believe it's the same troll as the other one.

Folks, please, use a little common sense.

If an unknown member posts a link that says "crash my computer", or is spamming the forums with the same link, or if you're not sure about a link, don't click on it.

Or, if you do, be prepared to have something pop up that you might not expect.

Email staff with a link to the thread.

Luckily I caught this one before much (I hope) damage was done. I hope this message saves someone some grief in case this type of annoyance happens again.

Thanks for the quick action AGAIN http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm amazed that some folks don't have ANYTHING ELSE TO DO but disrupt other peoples lives..

There must be a serious problem with an individual like that, missing a chromosome most likely http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

What effect does customizing your Java and JavaScript setting in Internet Explorer or Netscape, have on these types of attacks?

Socalgal, if you'd rather this stay more of a "warning" thread instead of a "what else can I do to prevent it" type of thread, just delete this post and I'll start a new one.

With Java/JavaScript, all ActiveX, Active Scripting all disabled, I still get a "static" (snow.gif) screen. It can be stopped by hitting the Stop button on the browser toolbar, won't appear to open many windows (taskbar) and mouse commands work.

But with the Java/JScript enabled, it will appear to open many windows (looking at the Taskbar), and your mouse commands will not respond, neither will Alt+F.

Doing a Ctrl+Alt+Del, the second line in there will close your browser (the actual page) and remove the "open" windows on the Taskbar. Ending task on the first line (ACK) will do nothing. This is in IE. I didn't try it in Netscape (which reminds me I need to download that on the ME box http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif )

That's what I've found playing with it for about 5 mins.

Oh, and please, DON'T think about posting the actual script here. Don't do it, either. Thanks. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Thanks for doing the leg-work, I thought that it would be possible to totally deny such scripts with the proper settings.

I was one of the stupid ones who's curiosity lead me to click on the "purple dinosaur link thingy", it opened 4 windows, but I had no trouble closing them from the taskbar.

Oh well,...guess the use of sound discretion is still very important. It's a shame that all this new technology that is being developed to expand our possiblilities, ends up being used against us at some point. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
