I'm looking at designing a webpage but I think I'm going to need to use frames. I remember being told quite a while back that frames, in general, were very unpopular and I shouldn't use them. If this is true, what possible alternative do I have to displaying a menu system on a number of pages?

You could use CGI scripting to have a basic template page with the user interface (menus) and have the specific content dynamically generated depending on what the user clicks on.... easy stuff if ya know perl or ASP.
Or just stick the same image map menu system on every page you make http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Ok--
My computer expertise is in hardware not software and while I've written webpages before (for businesses) I did my last one two years ago. The only professional software I have access to is FP 2000 (professional meaning full-version).
So what can I do that's effective, relatively easy, and doesn't require knowing PERL or ASP?
And are frames really that hated?
The reason people say that using "frames" isn't good is because some older browsers don't support websites that utilize frames. But, since most people nowadays use IE 5.0 and up or the newer versions of Netscape, using frames for your site shouldn't be a very big issue.

I don't think frames are as hated as they once were. Just make sure work properly.
One of the most annoying things about frames, which you can avoid, is when there is a link to another site and I click on it, it takes me to the other site but I'm still stuck in a frame window. Very irritating.
Either make links open a new brower window or give each frame a button that will "close this frame". Ya know what I mean?

One hting you can use to do your HTML for you is DreamWeaver. No professional web designers use Front Page because your site will look like it came from a WYSIWYG program. DreamWeaver on the other hand is used by many professional web designers that I know. Their sites do not look canned.
As for frames, if you do them in a stylish way and do not overdo them, you should be ok because few use older browsers. It depends on your audience. If it is a tech site, then go ahead because most of your visitors will be using up-to-date browsers.

Testing......

Nothing is wrong with WYSIWYG programs. Dream weaver is a WYSIWYG. I was just saying that FP is not a good way to go. Adobe GoLive is good as well but I have not used it.
Dave
What I was saying is that it is easy to spot a FP site. DW or AGL, you cannot spot easily because they are much better programs.
Great sites and art BTW. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Ohhh, don't worry--I know FP is a pretty lousy program. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif It's just all I have access too. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
What's wrong with WYSIWYG programs? I use Adobe Go Live and it works great with Photoshop. I make all my layouts in Photoshop and set them up with Adobe Go Live which is a WYSIWYG program. I'm not a professional web designer, but there are many professionals that use Adobe Go Live.... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Everything you see in these sites were made from scratch using Photoshop for the layout, Image Ready for the animated GIF's, and Go Live to make the layout for the web.
