I had someone put together a whole new system for me a few weeks ago. I'm handicapped, so I don't get to build them my self. :(
I sold my Motherboard & CPU to a novice friend. He got home and called asking how to get it up and running. I have always had my builder reformat and returned the PC fresh with Windows and ready to go.

So, can you please type out how to get an old hard drive running on a new motherboard? I know some of you know this by heart, :)

Simply put, he has a working computer, with Win98 already installed on his only hard drive, and wants to swap his CPU, Memory, and Motherboard with mine.
Does this require reformatting? If so, can I have someone give me a step by detailed step how to reformat, (if needed), what to do after installing the board, (installing the motherboard's CD), and start reinstalling Windows?
I ask a lot, I know. Please help. Thank you.

NO problem just plug the new mobo and start the the PC as normal. It will boot and then start updating its components. It will restart 3-4 times. Then ask for new drivers (if u have inbuilt Graphic & sound). And its finished. If thing get worse (never in my case) Reinstalling may required. ;)

It is highly recommended to reinstall the operating system with a new motherboard. I've been down this road and tried to run without reinstalling and caused myself more grief than it was worth. It was a great learning experience, though.

If you have a lan setup, move all the files you want to keep to the other computer before you start the rebuild process.

To format drive C:, boot to a windows startup disk. I suggest you select "With CDROM Support" so you can test the CD-Rom drive or install the OS.

At the A: prompt type Format c: /c/u, then press ENTER.

When you see the message All data on non-removable disk will be lost, proceed with format (Y/N), press Y and then press ENTER.

When the format completes, press ENTER when prompted for a Volume Label.

You will be returned to the A: prompt and format is complete.
