Can any one help. Have this curious problem that when I connect to the net via AOL Norton sys Doc tell me that my CPU is running at 100%. Sys monitor also reports this when I run it. This only happens when I connect via AOL and not my other ISP's, as soon as I get the "welcome to AOl msg" and the graphics load - bang off goes my CPU. AOl have not helped so I thought I would try here. Have tried closing all progs prior to logging on but still the same problem. When I disconnect the CPU returns to normal.

I have the following system.
PIII 600
768Mb Ram
Geforce2 gts 32 Mb agp card
Win ME
30Gb and 27Gb Hd's

Any advise (apart from ditching AOL) much appreciated.

I am using AOL V.7 now and my cpu only reads 2%, Have you upgraded to V.7 yet? if not maybe you should try that.

the only time my cpu constantly read 100% was when I tried a cpu cooling program  (the irony of it), as soon as I loaded the program the cpu would shoot up and stay there until I closed it down.

it maybe that AOL has an idler program built in, try running a program such as wincooler to see if it cancels it out. Sorry I don't have a link to the site, I scrapped it when it didn't work for me.

Thanks mate, have allready upgraded to AOL 7 (should have said - sorry) but the problem persists. Can't understand it as when I shut down AOL and start up my other ISP everything seems fine

I would check exactly what is running. It might be that AOL msger is running in a loop and taking up the CPU time.
What are you using to measure the usage? I found this link on these very forums Wintop (http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/wutoys/w95kerneltoy/). It is great, works fine in Win98SE, tells me exactly what is running (everything not just CTRL-ALT-DEL) and how much % CPU time they are using.

Maybe that will help.

Reduce the amount of memory that is installed in your computer to 512 MB or less. 768MB is a bit overkill for WIN_ME. Drop it down and see if the problem still exists....... Take care and good luck.......:D :D

Thanks for all the advise I know win ME does not like working with more than 512mb (had to change some setting) but it all works great when I log onto a different ISP using the same machine, so all I can deduce is that there is something going on between AOL and another program on my system. Again thanks for the advice.

HURRAY found the problem thanks for all your advice and help especially DocEvi1 with the Wintop program, fired it up and it was Norton Pers firewall 2002 that was hogging all the CPU power. Uninstalled it and system back to normal - will either contact Symantec to ask why or get Zone alarm instead.
Again many thanks for all your help. I want to have your babies.
Regards
