Hard Drives!!

Hello everyone!!! OK... i'm goign to buy a hard drive BUT i don't know which one... I'v been using Quantum for as long as I can remmeber (I currently have a 9 gig quantum fireball plus KA) and I love it. I have the Asus A7V mobo so i was thinking of getting an ATA100 drive by Quantum. But I have had epople tell me that:
a) ATA100's performance isn't worth the extra money over ATA66
and b) That maxtor has a better trasnfer rate, but a slower seek time.

So... what should I do?? I dont' want to spend a huge pile of dough here. I have around 250 to 300$ canadian (I found an ATA66 7200 RPM, 20 gig Quantum for 180$).

What company and spencs do you recomment?

New 15GB/platter disk are all fast. Newer 20GB/platter are faster and they are all (IBM, MAxtor etc) comming with their 20GB/platter HD's so give it a month.

I too like IBM best, mainly cause they are quiet.

Forgot something, the " Retail " HD's come with a cable,

in the case of a ATA66 or 100 drive, the cable is the 80 wire/40 pin cable with double grounding worth much more than the $7.00 or so difference between OEM and Retail Hard drives

I can't say enough good things about my IBM.
Of all the upgrades I've done, and I've done 'em all, going to an IBM 7200 rpm hard drive made the most noticeable performance difference.

IBM is the way to go. I have a 7200rpm 9.1GB (which is too small) I am not sure who exactly makes the IBM drives though. Mine says manufactured for IBM. I thought IBM made them!

Actually, IBM HDD's are made by Wester Digital. There is a rumor that Western Digital Drives will just go by the name IBM some time shortly. I think IBM may have bought them out. Quantum was bought out by Maxtor.

Sorry NDC but it's the other way around. WD buys technology and design from IBM to build their drives. After all IBM is the inventor of the HD and the largest manufacturer.

WD does make HDD's for IBM from what I heard from a computer store. I'm not talking about technology and design. I run Quantums on my system but have a friend w/IBM boy are you going to notice a difference quiet ......more like silent compared to my 7200 Fireball LM's which sound like they are transfering data via morse code in comparison. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

ohh, I see what you mean NDC. Indeed as part of their business, IBM sells technology and design to WD and they (WD) build IBM's at their site. Not all IBM drives are built by WD (especially not SCSI), only the ones that share the same design and technology. It's like Mitsubishi and Volvo cars among others. At one time Volvo had a shortage of engines and to keep the production some Volvos left the plant with Mitsubishi engines. After all the plant is owned by Renault and acts like a freelance manufacturing plant, so they only care to have max production and a glitch like lack of one's brands engines means nothing to them. Anyone know the warrenty time period for IBMs? I thought they were for a year. At the web site here (http://www.storage.ibm.com/warranty/jsp/arma31.jsp) to check the warrenty you have to enter the part # and serial #.
I don't have any to enter. Any help?

IDE's 3years, SCSI 5years. That's OEM.
