Which would be best to go with the SCSI or the IDE version? both have burn proof but wouldn't scsi allow you to more while your burning in the background, and proabably be faster since its not limited to the ide channel? ALso does anyone know if the scsi card comes with the drive when you buy it? Thanks
Yes, SCSI interface burner will be more reliable than IDE burner since it won't have to totally rely on the CPU, but as for the speed, the speed will be the same. 12x IDE or 12x SCSI = 1800kb. You know what I mean? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
You will probably have to buy a SCSI adapter, most CDRW drives don't come bundled with a SCSI adapter. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif Don't plan on spending more than $50 USD for a SCSI adapter if your're going to use it for the SCSI burner only. Otherwise, it may just be a waste of money. But if you're planning on getting a SCSI hard drive in the near future, it may be worth the money to get a good SCSI adapter, such as an Adaptec Ultra160 SCSI adapter.

Hey Mike, I just got the internal Plextor PlexWriter SCSI 12/10/32S and I love it! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
I can finally multi-task while burning. I've only burned a couple of CDs so far, but it has performed flawlessly with the latest Nero 5.0.3.1 software on W2K, and while online with MS Word, ICQ, OE, and RC5 running. I didn't even install the software for it.
I'm using a (Yamaha) Symbios Logic 875XS|D, 2280 PCI SCSI Adapter, and had to get an internal SCSI III to SCSI II adapter for the cable for the 50-pin male connection on the drive.
I don't think you'd be sorry going SCSI, but I've also heard here on the forums that the IDE version works well also, and Plextor incorporates their 'burn-proof' technology.
Do a Search here on Plextor for more threads and info, as I know Doc had one going a little while ago.
Yeah, I believe this is the topic that socalgal's referring to:

Oh Socalgal, congrats on the burner! I got a Plextor combo over the weekend also.
Plextor 8/4/32 EIDE CDRW http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Plextor UW 40x SCSI CDROM http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
I'll be using it in Win2k on a dual proc, should I have to worry about buffer underruns when I burn in Win2k and like surf the net or play games?
Here's what I figured...
I can either spend all my dough and get the Plextor SCSI 12x/10x/32x CDRW
-OR-
I can spend it on both a decent speeed EIDE Plextor CDRW and a SCSI Plextor CDROM
I'm sure 12x/10x/32x Plextor kicks ***** but its too rich for my blood right now.
Socalgal, you make me so jealous! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif LOL
Heck, its prolly going to end up like my other CDRW that I had a while ago...just eating dust.
Its wierd, I buy it and burn a few CDs when its like new and all, then after a while its like I don't even notice I have a burner @ all! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif hehe
With burn-proof technology from Plextor, it doesn't really matter whether its IDE or SCSI, it all comes down to preference IMO.

My 12/10/32 SCSI is on its way and should be in hand by Monday! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif For the scsi adapter, go with adaptec 19160, 29160, or the one that I have 39160. I think all will do, all are Ultra160 if I am correct. If you are going to buy a SCSI hard drive sometime in the future, you might as well buy a good controller. Good luck, and I hope that I will get my burner soon http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I just got one too. The Plextor 12/10/32 SCSI and put it in late last night.
That thing rocks!
Just for kicks, I was burning a CD while reading SysOpt, checking my mail, and I even opened up Word and printed a document.
Before I used to have to plan a burn session and go thru all the steps of closing down running tasks, turning off screensaver, and then leaving everything alone during the burns.

I wasn't planning on adding a scsi hard drive in the future, so i just need a scsi card for the cd-rw and to hook my older external scanner too. I was thinking maybe the Adaptec 2930U. How is that?

Thats what I'm using Mike, an Adaptec 2930u.
I happen to also have a Jazz Drive and that card is working real good. It also has the external connection you need for your scanner.
There is one other card that Adaptec has thats about 20 bucks less, but I'm not too sure about the specs for it.

Yeah i checked that out dave and it doesn't support ultra scsi like this drive does, so i think i'll just go with the 2930u. Thanks!
