Thanks http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Undertow 11-18-2000, 09:58 AM I think I understand this correctly...you want to know which is better to have on slave, the CDROM drive or the hard drive? If that is what you are asking then the answer is to always have the CDROM on slave and the hard drive on Master. Oh wait, now I understand. It really doesn't make a difference which one you slave it to. But a couple of days ago a friend who was installing his CDR told me his instructions stated to slave it to the hardrive. Hence the question? Right now, the CDR is slaved to the hardrive. petr0lb0mb 11-19-2000, 12:44 AM You want to avoid slaving any CD devices to the hard drive. Always try to keep slower devices off of the primary IDE cable. BTW - What brand of CDR did your friend buy? I would ask him to show the instructions. Most technical papers that I've read do not support this theory however. If the CD-Rom is in use though, it will be using some of the bandwidth that the hard drive might be able to take advantage of. I suggest putting the CD-R on a different channel than the device that you will be using to write to it most of the time. In other words, if you're mostly going to be burning CD-Rs directly from the CD-Rom, then it's best not to have the CD-Rom and CD-R on the same channel. Conversely, if you're going to be burning primarily from the HDD to the CD-R, then put the CD-R on the secondary channel. My personal opinion is that pairing CD-Roms and HDD's on the same channel doesn't hurt the HDD performance, so I suggest the following setup; Primary Master - HDD Primary Slave - CD-Rom Secondary Master - CD-R Secondary Slave - empty BTW, if you do end up with the CD-R and CD-Rom on the same channel, I've never heard anyone suggest slaving the CD-R to the CD-Rom. Alway make the CD-R the master and the CD-Rom slave. ck42866 11-19-2000, 06:30 AM Then I'll leave it alone for now. Seems to be fine this way, though it seemed fine the other way too. Thanks http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Maybe this will eliminate some of the coasters that I have made in the past. NDC 11-19-2000, 06:37 AM My CDROM and CDRW are connected on the same IDE channel. CDRW = Secondary Master and CDROM Secondary Slave. I burn CD's at 8x from CD to CD and never get coasters. Even when I multi-task. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif SysOpt.com
