I bought an Ultra SCSI-3 160 Quantum/Atlas 7200 drive/ 4MB cache, but I could only afford an Ultra Wide SCSI card for now.

Anyway, so I got a cheap $79 SIIG Ultra Wide (actually it is Advanced System) 40MB/s but the system is still surprizingly fast! I love it. Man the system has never run better - Linux - Windows - everything

...oops BeOS doesn't recognize the thing..so what!? -no great loss.

Sounds GREAT.

What bottlenecks do you expect now that the write/read speeds and the swapfile are NOT the issue..

Hey, laugh if ya like, I'm still learning how to cut mine ON http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

UW-SCSI is 80Mb/s. Make sure to enable wide negotiations in the SCSI BIOS.

Better yet get the U160 adapter...

Lucky you! I'd convert my system to SCSI if I could afford to but I have to cut corners somewhere and having IDE is the only place I think is best place to cut corners in my system. If I had SCSI I would only have 64MB RAM instead of 256MB and still a P3 450 instead of a P3 700.

How's it going there Mr. C. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Just it until you get a Ultra160 SCSI card, you will really use your new Ultra160 SCSI drive to it's potetential http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif If and when you do get a Ultra160 SCSI Adapter, go for the Adaptec 29160N which utilizes 32bit PCI ports. That's what I'm using for my Cheetah Ultra160 10,000RPM and this sucker flys. I'm using the same drive on my system at work that has doesn't use a Ultra160 card, but a UltraWide SCSI, and it makes a very noticeable difference despite the fact that the HDD is the same as the one I'm using at home. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

If you're M/B has 64bit PCI ports, go for the 29160, not 29160N. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

NDC, just so you know, we have another member here we call Mr. C (or, MrC or, Mr.C) which is a shortened nick for the affectionately-known-and-respected-to-many-here: MR COMPUTER.

Now, CMonster is a different animal altogether.

Oh! lol, CONGRATS CMonster, hope you're enjoying your new toy http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I'm using the IBM 36LZX (10K) on my UW controller and I have to say other than the access I am not very impressed compared to my 75GXP. I put it on the 29160 (not N) and ohh boy! If you go for the 160 series controller make sure it is NOT the 19160 cause linux does not (AFAIK) see it.

Thanks for all the replies.

Richard_C... I will complain about the drive bottleneck until they make solid-state affordable.

qball - I believe UW SCSI is 40MB/s and UW SCSI-2 is 80MB/s ..anyway my card is UW and 40MB/s

Wide negotiations is enabled.

Dave2 - SCSI and got 256MB on this mere Classic Athlon 600 system... My Athlon T-Bird 800 has the Ultra ATA66 drive & 256MB - I do consider myself lucky!

NDC - call me whatever you like but don't call me late for dinner or free beer. Na' Make-ju-reul mu-chuck-i-na cho-a hey! (you know what I mean)!! other advice noted e.g. 29160N

-ahh.. to me maek-ju is just liquid food, NDC, -now soh-ju that's where the "I-did-what-last-night?" really comes into play http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

...ku-run-dae, the point is ... if it's free don't call me late...

What has all this to do with SCSI? Well the morning after a night of free maek-ju or soh-ju I tend to feel pretty SCSI...
