Hi,
My system is a dual boot 98 and 2k.
I've got a Motorola SM56 PCI DFV Speakerphone modem.
I've identified it correctly and it works perfectly in windows 98.
I've also got the correct windows 2000 drivers (I'm certain of this) and the modem installs correctly and the diagnostics report that everything is well.

When I start Hyperterminal I can dial out using the modem and it works perfectly. However when I create a dial up networking connection or use Phone Dialer I can't connect at all.
The modem makes no effort to dial and I get DUN error 692 and a message about a catastrophic hardware failure.
The modem is installed perfectly and is brand new and working perfectly in 98 (I'm online with it now).

Its a really strange problem and I'd be interested in hearing your insights into it.

That Motorola SM56 modem is a very inexpensive and fairly unreliable modem (you can get em here for $8-9 USD) which causes problems or simply doesn't work with a number of systems so it doesn't surprise me that it doesn't work in W2k.

You can go to the modem sites (use google and enter modem troublshooting) - there's a couple of ISP sites that give you some tips on how to make them work) and try to disable detecting the dial tone, different init strings, etc.

But in short you're better off investing some more money in a better modem, the extra money is more than worth the time and effort you'll put into it trying to get the SM56 to work under both.

I think you're right. I might pick up a hardware modem altogether.
Thanks for your time,
