I have got one Hp and two Packard Bell's. I got them cheap at auction and I now know why. My son could do better.

They all come with a vast array of software that is locked to the cpu unique identifier. What a joke.

They will take your money, but you will not be able to do anything with the **** they sell you.

Anyway, three complete disassembles later and a mix and match rebuild jobby, I now have three decent systems.

Price has got nothing to do with it. Give people what they want and they will buy it. Amazing how quick complete dummies will pick up on the fact they are being shafted.

Hows about a $200 dollar pc cos thats all they are really worth.

Yes indeed, riser cards are the killers, if anyone dissagrees let me know, I'm tired of the major comp killers and ther riser card boards, thats the biggest farce or I should say,"Monopolized nitch to force the customer back to the manufacturer for any potential upgrades". Let me ask ya fellas something, have you ever had a 66mhz bus speed riser card board with a 200 watt power supply?, Gee what can I do with this? hmm 233 mmx at best, Naw I'll pull the board and upgrade the motherboard! LOL, I think not! Shame on it, Yeh its not easy to make chicken soup out of chicken ****, but it can be done with the right parts! If anyoneone can indeed help out a vertically challenged 90 degree wrong gendered standard board God bless em! I feel bad for those individuals that Indeed got caught up into those virtually un upgradeble processing boards or a future utilyzation of the case, I was a victim in 95 with a 75 mhz pentium, Packard bell and also a 133 mhz Packard bell in 96. It had take me 2 times to learn my lesson! LOL I build em now, but to make an extensive long story short! Fantastic job that you gathered them together to make things work out for your best interest! Give me a shout folks! Take care man!

There are two kinds of computers on the retail market today. Junky ones and junkier ones and the price offers no comparison. A buddy reciently brought his 1 year old $1200 dead Micron to me for repair. When I cracked the hood I found a non legacy MB with no agp slot, 2 pci slots, and an arm slot (whatever that's for). It was a 900 mhz celery cpu with a whopping 185 watt power supply. This fine power supply had a fan in it that ran slow enough to count the fan blades when it was running. He tried to add some ram and broke the plastic lever that is supposed to lock it in. The case was so poorly made I would hesitate to even use it with a new motherboard. After a new 300 watt power supply and jury rigged ram slot I was glad to see out the door before something else quit while it was in my shop. For that kind of money I could have built him a faster rig with quality parts, a cdrw and none of the crappy software he got with it. I was impressed with the fancy 150+ key keyboard it sported. I had assolutely no idea what all the extra keys were for and I doubt most of them worked but it sure looked like you could fly it to Jupiter. I have come to the conclusion that most people today don't buy a computer to do any useful work, they just like pushing buttons and feel a need to demonstrate thier wealth to the Jones next door.

One of our systems is a Packard Bell Multimedia M415.

It started life as a P166MMX with 24mb of RAM, it now sports a P200MMX, 64mb of RAM and a Voodoo 2 for the kids to play their games on. Still it has its tricks. We can't put any other mobo in the case (totally weird form factor), but it does have a 200W PSU.
The onboard sound chip is useless since we can't find drivers for it under Win98 and the original Win95CD is long gone. So we put an old ESS Audiodrive in it. The original modem is dead-- but we put a NIC in it to connect through the LAN.

It's gonna run 'til we kill it-- but that was a true pain to upgrade even as far as it has been.

A couple of years ago, i bought a Packard Bell 100MHz pile of junk off a mate for about £10 :D
I kept the FDD and CDROM and not much more. The only use for the rest of it was to take an angle grinder to the case, cut the front and insides out and I had a quite useful monitor stand with space for CDs and FDs under it.

The only time I had no probs with a Packard Bell upgrade :D
