How about the Turtle Beach Montego II PCI-A3D for $20? Any recommendations/advice welcome. (This is my first DIY computer, made mostly from inherited parts, including a Celeron 466 cpu.)

I would go with the basic Creative Labs sound blaster 16 or awe64 value. pricewatch has them both for under $20.

if you can scroung up $20 more you can get a soundblaster live value and it is a world above a sb16...

I've seen the sb-live value at $30, but didn't check on shipping charges.

Try www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com) if you haven't already.

Yup, Creative pci16 or Creative Ensoniq pci.
Pretty much the same card and both work well.

Soundblaster Live value is the best value in sound cards right now. The Diamond MX300 is a nice one too. Hey sound cards are cheap, spend the extra 20 bucks and get a current one.
