Hi,
After reading a bunch of reviews on KT266A motherboards, I decided to buy the Soyo SY-K7V DRAGON Plus!.
However to my great surprise I couldn't find any stores in Montreal, Canada who was selling Soyo boards. After speaking to a few salesmen in various stores they told me they weren't selling Soyo boards anymore because they were unreliable boards and because they had a high percentage of returns.
Now I find this a bit weird since all the reviews I read on the SY-K7V were stating it was one of the best board currently available...
What's your views on this?

I dont own a dragon but my K7VTA-PRO works beautifully with an Athlon 900 and 512 megs of ram. This machine is about 9 months old and gives me no trouble at all

I don't own a DRAGON either, but I plan on buying one. I'm running a K7VTA right now and have been for over a year. It's never given me any problems.
I have run into the same problems buying from retail stores. They don't seem to carry a lot of the better computer components. I don't know why, but it's the same here in the U.S. If you want good stuff, you gotta buy it online.

I have a dragon+, and I have been very pleased with it. I did have some problems setting it up though. I originally installed win98se on it, and my game performance was very bad. I tried everything I could think of, and almost sent the board back. I scored a copy of winxp and installed it to see what would happen and (believe it or not) xp fixed everything. I don't know what I did wrong with 98se, but I guess it must have been my fault.
Anyway it's running rock solid, with an x1600+ oc'd to 1800+ and I think it will do 1900+. I wouldn't worry about the store having lots of returns....it's probably more user error than anything else.
Also, every review I have read about it has been very positive, so go for it! :D

Yeah that's what I was thinking; more a pebcak than a true problem coming from Soyo.
I still got a problem however... I must buy the parts from some specific stores in Montreal. I can't buy it online because I'm using a student loan which is guaranteed by the government and they have a list of stores from which we must buy... it sucks, but it's a low rate loan and we don't have any payments 'til we finish school so I won't complain.
So basically, since the stores don't want to do a special order for the Soyo board I'll have to go for another board. I might take the MSI K7T266Pro2-RU, but I'm not quite sure yet.

I read your post Ironwalker..and I'm a little confused. You get good scores in q3 and the other benchmarks, your drives seem slow and you have no sound. Why aren't you blasting the soundcard maker? Or couldn't it be an xp problem? You say you saw posts in 12 forums complaining about the dragon+..hell there are hundreds griping about xp. Maybe your lawyer can sue all of the companies..then you can buy a plant in Taiwan and make your own boards.
Get a grip man.

I know I've already given my opinion on the DRAGON, but I feel the need to post again.
I've read a lot of great reviews and comments on the DRAGON, but I don't think I can be a good judge unless I own one. Everyone has different experiences with products. I like SOYO, never had a problem with them. Some people can't get them to work at all. This doesn't mean it's not a good product. There are many factors than can contribute to a good or bad experience with any product.
For example, I used a Voodoo5 5500 for about a year and a half. I loved it, never had a problem. Ran Quake great, good benchmarks, overall, a really nice piece of hardware. Recently I bought a GeForce3 and gave my V5 to my brother. He can vever get it to work right. He gets skips in Quake, can't run Anti-Aliasing, and has to "dumb down" his games to run them. BTW, he has a faster system than me. I've talked to a lot of his friends and they can't get their's to run good either, but that doesn't mean it's not a good card.
The point is this: there are a few not so good products, but most are generally equal, depending on the user. You can read reviews and comments, good or bad, but you can't know for sure unless you buy one. Don't misunderstand me, reviews and user comments are a very good thing. It gives us a way of "trying" the product before we buy it. But don't put all your faith in what people say. It's a good way to get ideas, but you really need to try it before you judge.
I know I rambled and a lot of whta I said may be strange, but it's just my opinion. Don't judge me too harshly. :)

I have a Soyo k7via, a classic athlon board and have run into some compatability problems with W2k. Additionally the onboard sound failed to work well and the usb 3 and 4 failed to work at all . Overall I haven't run into any fatal problems though.

  :( When I bought my Soyo Dragon Plus!, I did it because I read reviews and faqs. Since I've had it, I've had few problems, but one. Whenever I start up I have to hold the insert key to get a reaction from my monitor, and I want to know how to get past that. Ive emailed soyo several times, but they never responded. Its pissing me off  Im just wondering if I can get past it. Ive got a voodoo 3 video card and latest drivers. Please can someone send me a response on an elimination to my problem.
