Hi,

Just want to pass on the info.
I got a full refund for my PIIIDME and I am now running a good old Asus P2B-D.

I have the "orginal" PDF doc from Intel, so if you want it, I can email it to you http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Change Notification #: 996
Change Title: Intel ® 840: MRH-S Chipset Component PCN for Product
Discontinuance
Date of PCN Publication: June 9, 2000
Type of Change Notification:
Product Discontinuance
Key Characteristics of the Change:
Product Discontinuance
Forecasted Key Milestones:
Product Discontinuance Program Support Begins: June 5, 2000
Product Discontinuance Demand to Local Intel Representative Due: N/A
Last Product Discontinuance Order Date (firm, non-cancelable orders): N/A
Last Product Discontinuance Shipment Date: N/A
Description of Change to the Customer:
In February, Intel informed customers that certain server and workstation platforms using the MRH-S (Memory Repeater Hub –
SDRAM) were experiencing memory errors that may result in system hangs and system reboots. The MRH-S exhibited single
and multiple-bit errors. These errors varied from platform to platform and could be specific to just certain motherboards. In
some cases, errors occurred only under specific stress tests using certain data patterns, so it was critical to test a broad sampling
of products.
At that time, Intel had decided to place shipments of MRH-S parts on hold as a precautionary measure while Intel and its
customers continued to investigate the issue. This action provided OEMs with the opportunity to perform a suitable level of
testing with their MRH-S based products. Intel had also recommended that OEMs not ship any MRH-S based designs until a
permanent solution was found.
The MRH-S is used with the Intel® 840 Chipset to translate memory protocol from RDRAM* to SDRAM. The memory errors
are strictly limited to SDRAM based systems utilizing the Intel® 840 chipset with MRH-S. The majority of systems in the
marketplace using the Intel 840 Chipset is Direct RDRAM memory-based and is not affected by this issue.
After further testing, Intel and its customers have determined that the MRH-S is sensitive to system noise caused by the
simultaneous switching of signals on its buses. This noise issue is independent of OEM board designs, and board level
improvements may reduce instances of errors but cannot guarantee error-free designs. Intel’s analysis of the time, cost and the
redesign effort required to completely resolve this issue results in the MRH-S availability falling outside the desired design
window for a majority of OEMs. Therefore, Intel has decided to remove support for the MRH-S on the Intel® 840 chipset
from its POR and will discontinue production of MRH-S.
Intel is working with its customers (computer makers, motherboard makers and distribution channels) to notify impacted
computer users of this issue. Intel is also working individually with its impacted OEMs on the options available under Intel’s
warranty program.

Customer Impact of Change and Recommended Action:
As of May 10, 2000, Intel has required that its customers put all products that contain an Intel MRH-S component with the
Intel ® 840 Chipset and SDRAM memory on production and shipment hold.
All Intel ® 840/MRH-S chipset kits (MCH, ICH, MRH-S, FWH components) currently in your inventories that have not been
integrated into products should be immediately returned to Intel. This includes opened/unopened boxes and reels. All
Intel ® 840/MRH-S chipset kit returns will be addressed through Intel's product Return Material Authorization (RMA) process.
Intel is requesting all of its direct customers send all WIP, finished goods inventory and customer returned MRH-S based
boards to Intel. Intel will contact each of its direct customers to provide information on warranty program options and the
process and details for the return of MRH-S based boards to Intel.
Customers with 840/MRH-S backlog should contact their field sales representative to cancel any outstanding Intel® 840/MRH-S
orders. Customers can choose to only cancel the MRH-S component backlog and keep the other 840 components on order or
they can cancel the whole 840 chipset kit order.
