Hey folks, I just want to network my old pc with my new pc. Do not care about sharing my internet connection.. just interested in file and resource sharing as well as gaming pc to pc.
I use Win98SE on both pc's and each has an ethernet adapter. I just bought a 5 port 10/100 hub and an extra cable.
My current network configuration is set up to access my cable connection.
I unplugged my cable connection and plugged into the hub with both pc's while everything was off.
According to the hub box, I should now be networked. Hmmm. Not.
My Network config is as follows:
Client for Microsoft Networks
Microsoft Family Logon
Dial-Up Adapter
VIA PCI 10/100Mb Fast Ethernet Adapter
TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter
TCP/IP -> VIA PCI 10/100Mb Fast Ethernet Adapter
(My old pc has same config except different brand ethernet adapter)
I currently use Microsoft Family Logon and have never set up a password or user either. It is just me on the system.l
When I have both pc's hooked up thru the hub and turn everything on.. neither pc can see any other oc's in network neighborhood. I made sure each pc also has same workgroup name. I also enabled file and printer sharing on my old pc but not the new one since I want it to access the internet when not connected to my network.
How complex is this going to be..? Should I take the hub back and trade it for a usb direct network connector for 2 pc's? This item says if I do not know how to config a network, the software that comes with it will configure it for me. That sound nice.. I just don't want to lose my cable internet sonnectivity settings in the process. Or have to re-config each time I want to network the pc's and re-config again each time I disconnect them so my main pc can go online.
Should I try that USB Direct connect and see if it will just config it for me.? Or can anyone (if willing) make my ethernet hub network easy to config by telling me what to do?
Take your time and thanks for any responses :)
