 does someone know how to get rid of an error msg at bootup
very 1st screen goes through the ram check and HD check
and at the last 2 lines it says:

ERROR
COM B Configuration Changed

i have no idea how to get rid of that
i already flashed the bios with success, it shows the new version,
but everytime my com boots, it asks me to:

F1 to go to setup F2 to continue

it will not load win98 on its own unless i hit F2

any suggestions would be helpful...

When a bios is flashed, it is set to a factory default. You need to go into setup (bios) and re configure the settings. I have no idea exactly what the settings should be, but on boot, it is telling you that COM B Configuration Changed. This setting was obviously different before you flashed the bios, so it will need to be corrected to back like it used to be with the old bios.

well that was the problem alright, but this bios is different then i'm used too, under (advance) i set com a and com b to auto and it worked, no eror msg and it goes strait to win 98se..

thankyou

but now i have a different problem lol, much more serious, hopefully you maybe able to help..

the com seems to be working perfectly, ecept in 1 area, i have
3 pci slots
2 isa slots
in one of the isa slots i have awe64 SB card
other slot i have us 56k sportster modem

after formatting the com recongnized everything but the modem

no problems at all in device manager

so in either add/remove progams or click on the modem icon in control panel to detect my modem i get the Blue Screen

a fatal exception OD: has occuued at 00AB:0000B52B

so i took out the modem and restarted the com to see if maybe the modem was bad and causing the problem..

i still get the same error when i goto either add/remove progams or click on the modem icon in control panel to detect my modem even with the modem out of the com..

Hopefully you can help me in this area as well :)

Thankyou again :)

have you reloaded the appropriate drivers for your peripheral devices? Even though Windows may recognize some of your devices you could be experiencing problems from a generic driver that may have been loaded by windows. an old puter I had would get the same blue screen of death anytime I stuck a cd in it. Turned out that the system was being crashed because I was not running the Creative disc detector program that came with the soundcard. Try updating your device drivers via the device manager then try loading loading the sportster software and see if it finds the modem.

Some way, the com port is still not configured properly. I have about the same setup with a SB AWE64 in the next to last ISA socket and the USR ISA modem in the last slot which is where I was advised to put them years ago.

I had to disable the com port in bios to run my modem on a com port. Next time I shut down, I will check my bios to refresh my memory on how I have it setup in bios, but the USR hardware modem is a little different than a PnP PCI modem, and I am pretty sure I disabled the com port in bios so that the modem could use that port. Try this, go into device manager, remove the modem there, remove com 2 also, shut down and remove the modem from the system. reboot and go into bios and disable com port 2 (I think) reboot into Windows and see what happens when you click on add/remove programs or modems in control panel ect. If that cured the problem. shut down and replace the modem, reboot and let Windows redetect and install the modem. Let us know what happens. (On a reboot, Windows may reinstall the com port, but I don't think so if it is disabled in the bios)

On another note...I flashed a bios last night. went into bios and reset it for the default settings, saved and rebooted. Went back into bios and reset all of my settings to their previous settings, saved and rebooted into Windows. All looked good, until I attempted another reboot. Now the boot fails just after verifying dmi pool data. tried booting 4 times. same thing. I use a Promise controller card, so I took that out, connected the HDD to IDE 1 on the mobo, autodetected that, and booted into Windows just fine...several times. So...something has happened now that the system doesn't see the controller card I guess. Flashing a bios seems to cause many little glitches sometimes that have to be worked out little by little. Sence your modem was working ok before the flash, and now has a problem...the problem is some setting in bios that has to do with the com port.
