pc chips m1647 motherboard

PC CHIPS M1647, ALi Sound, AMDK7 1400GHz
Just upgraded from 98se to XP Pro. Got all working but sound. Uses ALi riser card. (Appears to use AC97 Codec). It looks like it should be working??? Only problem is no signature. PC Chips web site has not helped as yet. Idea's?:confused:

hmmm ... PC-Chips are making just one ALi chipset socket-A board, the M817 (aka ECS K7AMA). But this doesn't use a riser card for the sound (but does use an AMR riser card for the modem function if you have that).

anyway, if that board of yours uses the ALi chipset sound engine with an AC97 codec for the analog in/out stuff, you might want to pick up ALi's sound drivers for the 1535D(+) south bridge from www.ali.com.tw ... remember, the codec doesn't do the sound processing, the chipset does (with a little or more help from the CPU).

Thanks Peter. You are right about the m.b. It is M817 Series, V11.3A. Below that in the m.b. book it says A1647X, must be what I picked up on. Will try you suggestions. Thanks very much.

I must have made it to this point with the sound driver last night. I am getting the same error message as before. "ALi Audio hardware information is not found in the system registry database, please reboot and run SETUP again."
I did... Then I reinstalled XP Pro again. Same problem. The crazy thing is in Hardware Settings all looks fat and happy. But I have no access to volume control setting changes. It's there, but dim
in color, unavailable. I am not sure now what to try next. I apparently need my ALi info in the Windows Registry???

so ... did you enable the sound engine in BIOS, do you see it in the device summary displayed right before boot, is it there in device manager?
