I have a two year old elite pc celeron333 with a PII-3100B amptron motherboard. Last week I powered up the computer and all I got was a flash of the green light and then nothing. I would hit the power switch and nothing. If I turned off the power supply and then hit the power switch I would get the green flash again but then nothing. So figuring I needed a new power supply I bought 250w power supply connected everything up, and got nothing, identical reactions as to before power supply. So I douvle checked main motherboard connection and when I pushed it in, voila, everything started powered up however before the monitor would even start I got this noise, which all I can describe was like a french police siren, hi beep,lo beep, continiously. No matter what I tried or took out I still got this siren. I took the hard drive out and connected as a slave to another computer, but I couldn't even read it, bad partition table, unrecoverable error. Any idea what happened, what i can do???

Thanks,
Double G:(

The fact that the system made an attempt to start after pulling and resetting mobo might be the key. Keep a can of compressed air on hand and pull the mobo again to check contacts. You probably would not see anything, but blow them off and also blow out the mobo socket to remove any debri. Hopefully, that is the only problem. Also, clean rest of plugins, especially the power-to-board plug and socket.

Check video card and memory...you'll get beep codes for those two things if they aren't in there right. Also try to clear the CMOS that may help out a bit

Double check that your cpu cooling fan is running at top speed. The siren sound you hear could be an overheat warning if your mother board supports this. The fact that you harddrive is not recognized on another computer is not good. If the DMA settings on the host computer match the settings on the drive and it still is not recognized by bios then the drive is probably fubar. If the connector on the MB was loose it could have damaged lots of things. If the 12 volt supply was cut but the cpu core voltage still worked, the MB, cpu and/or HD could be toast. Try and see if the MB will post with only the cpu, ram and video card connected. If it doesn't you will have eliminated a lot of possible problems. If it does post start adding components one at a time to find the faulty part. Good luck, ukulele

Well I pulled everything possible from the motherboard, even the video card, I left in the ram, plugged it in, pushed the start button, and again I get this hi tone, low tone, siren running continously, the fan on the cpu does seem to be running properly. Since I have apsolutely nothing plugged in am I to assume the motherboard is gone, what about the cpu? Is there anyway to check for sure.

Thanks for all your help.

I know of no way to check the CPU without BIOS access so you can disable the CPU cache. Without the BIOS access, the CPU check is a dead duck. The only available test for CPU would be to pull it and then reset, but you probably have done that.

You don't happen to know what type of bios you have do you?

Go ahead and reconnect memory, video card, keyboard, mouse, and reseat cpu then try to startup. Unplug the fan. See if you can get any beep codes that you can recognize. If not, there are some good deals on new motherboards.
