I've been offered a job as a sound tech for a local band in my area, but I am leary of accepting since I have minimal sound console experience, and my setup skills arn't what they should be. Does anyone have suggestions as to what I could read, where I should go, what should I do, to further my skills in those areas? I'd really appreciate some feedback cause I havn't been able to turn up anything online. Thanks!

The band members might be able to "show you the ropes" to get you started. They probably know what they need but can't be performing and operating the gear at the same time.

I know exactly where you're coming from, I've been in TV Sound for 35 years and writing about it monthly for 15. I'll dig around and try to get you something that will help.

Obviously they have asked your opinoin for a reason. Do you have a good ear? that is what it takes. I have worked in a few clubs in St. Louis doing sound and lights and one of my hobbies is car audio. It takes a good ear to estimate what a room is going to sound when you have a crowd of people blocking your highs/mids and where you proper bass placement is. Heck, you may even have to balance your freqencies according to the room size, etc. It all builds up experience.

This might not serve your purpose skybolt but it might help anyone having trouble with the sound in a room. Here is an Exel spreadsheet to calculate room acoustics, it's for a home theater; www.guidetohometheater.com/shownews.cgi?388. (http://www.guidetohometheater.com/shownews.cgi?388.)
