A friend of mine just bought 256 mb memory for his old pc. He originally just had a single stick of pc 100 32 mb in it. He took out his old 32 mb and inserted the new 256 stick in the bank that the 32 mb was in. Everything seemed to boot up ok. The problem happened when he went to use his modem. When he tried to connect to Juno it would attempt to dial all the connect numbers and then not connect to any of them and then gave some modem error message. He took out the 256 stick and the replaced the old 32 stick and it worked ok? The when he tried to put the 256 stick back it did the same thing  Anybody have any thoghts? I have never seen anything like this before.

Thanks
Jutah :)

Incompatibility of the new RAM with the old board. What's the brand? Is it a generic brand? Try using named brands like Kingston or Crucial RAM. If it doesn't work, then you gotta look for older RAM (PC100). I'm assuming the 256MB stick he's got is of PC133 type. Hope it helps. :)

//Try placing the RAM in another DIMM slot. It might help. If this doesn't work then you should try the above mentioned. Swap the current RAM for another stick.

Preferably go to Crucial.com and enter his PC make or motherboard model in their configuator and select a proper stick from them. Tell him to sell the old memory or keep it for a rainy day.

Update on my friends mem prob. He returned the pc133 and got the pc100 256mb it still had the same problem? Then he went and talked to a guy to a computer store who advised him to change something in his BIOS. Do you guys know what that guy could be talking about? Sry I don't know the mb, but me friend is not that computer literate and I have not had time to physically go there yet to check it out.

Thanks
Jutah:)
