I got a Dexxa optical mouse, and it works great, no cleaning a ball or anything, but the red light stays on after I turn my computer off. Is this supposed to happen? If I turn my computer off at the power supply, then the light will turn off, but the normal "soft off" method leaves the light on.

Is it USB? Do you have a USB hub that is powered?
I know exactly what you're talking about, Szech. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I use a Cyber Beetle Optical mouse on 4 systems and 2 of them goes off when the PC is powered down and 2 of the PC's don't. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif All my systems are on a power strip so when I'm not using the system, I just turn the power strip off so that no power flows in the M/B when the PC is not in use. That is one method you may want to use also. The mouse optical lights staying on or turning off depends on the mainboard that you're using. You also have to rememeber that 5V of power is flowing in your M/B even when you turn off the PC. I think it's just the different way that mainboard manufacturers have their PS2 port power status when PC is powered down...
Here is how my systems behave that use optical mice:
Soltek-EV1 = Mouse turns off when PC is powered down. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Tyan S1832DL = Mouse turns off when PC is powered down. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Abit BE6-2 = Mouse stays on even when PC is powered down. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
Gigabyte GA6-BXDS = Mouse stays on even when PC is powered down. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
Like I said above, just have all the power plugs related to your PC and devices on a single power strip that will cut the power off to your PC power and all devices. That's the way I've always used my systems even before I started using an optical mouse! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
And yes, that is normal for optical mice to do that on certain mainboards as I explained above. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Isn't this unnecessary wear though?
It certainly is...... Just pop that power switch off on your power strip. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Whew! Thanks. I was getting a little concerned for a while there http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. Isn't this unnecessary wear though?
Unnecessary wear? On an LED? Maybe over fifteen years of never being shut off, or a nasty power surge that would also kill everything between the power supply and the mouse... If it's not keeping you up at night I wouldn't worry about it.
Actually, it isn't LED. Szech stated that incorrectly. It's optical laser, and it isn't going to last 15 years, trust me. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Buy hey, that would be nice if optical mice lasted even 3 years. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
An optical laser in a mouse... Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that simply be a directed LED for a source? I can't see it being much more than that, although I haven't owned one personally.
