...and yet I cannot find an easy way of fixing it. After I upgraded one of my pc's to Windows XP Pro from 98SE, the icons for Control Panel and Printers & Faxes remained the same as the old Win98 icons! As you all probably know, it's easy to change many icons for various items in XP, except of course, those ones. It's not causing any problems of course although they look oddly out of place. Does anyone know how to replace the Control Panel & Printers and Faxes icons with the proper XP ones? Thanks in advance!

Thank Mark, but I had tried that before and it didn't work. XP seems to think that it's the correct icon. Any other suggestions?

Of course replacing the bitmap files of those icons would solve the problem. Uhm, the problem is that you have to locate those files. I don't know exactly where they could be allocated, and what weird name they may have. But you should recognize it easily in any system folder, as icon files always display automatically their content (that is, the actual icon you see).
File extension for icons is .ico
And of course you have to get the real XP icons from somewhere...
Dunno, perhaps this helps...

Thanks doubleclick...but they don't seem to be in the system folder either. a few days ago I searched the whole computer for everything with the .ico extension and of course, there were none for control panel or printers! where in the heck are these things hiding!?! and when I do find them, if ever, how would i replace the wrong ones?

I just remembered that when right-click on a folder and go to the properties menu, and there click on the change icon button, a lot, if not all default Windows icons appear (also the control panel icon, btw). The file name of those icons is also displayed: It seems that they are all located in one same file:
%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll
Take a look at those icons in the properties menu and see if there appears the correct control panel icon, or also your old W98 one. If so, you could replace this file. Just ask a friend of yours who has XP to mail it to you.
(Oh, btw, the %SystemRoot% folder is actually your Windows folder)
Good luck! :)

IMPORTANT:
Be careful when replacing this file. Keep a copy of the old one. You can never know if it bugs up your system. Dunno what else could be stored in this dll

Yeah, I saw the icon hiding in there...taunting me. But I have no idea of how to mess around inside a DLL!! You'd think that if it were so "dynamic" it would be able to give up my freakin icon that it's holding hostage. Blast that thing. I WILL rescue my icon, oh yes, I will. Ok, now I need someone to tell me how to mess around inside a DLL ;)
thanks

reinstall your printer software (after an uninstall, reboot).
That won't help for the control panel icon, and i doubt that it could help with the printer icon, as it is provided by the system, not the printer-specific software.

I might be wrong because I only used XP for about 5 minutes on a comp in a store. Somewhere in the display control panel, I think under you can set all these icons. More importantly, somewhere (advanced button in one of the other tabs?) there is a checkbox to use Win9x look and feel. If that were checked it might do this.
