I got a year old 1 gig amd athylon pc w/ fic MB, 255mb ram, fx video card w/16megs.... NEVER Overclocked... System blower fan next to video card, case fan, dual orb cpu fan.... Main cpu fan is runing @ almost 7000 rpms/ case fan is running @ 3120 rpms.... My problem is over heating it gets up to 140deg after a few hours of use, after 30 mintues its now @ 132deg.... yes I did apply thermal grease. All fans seem to be working fine.... Any suggestions?
thanks

Where did you get the CPU from.
Only thing I can think of is that it's been overclocked, by some body else and sold as 1GHz when it might have orig a 800MHz for example.

got it new and looked unused in original package from where I got my MB, mb was defective and replaced new, also my 255 mbs memory drains fast now with multiple apps... my room has been very cool... It was running much cooler, now it climbs to 138 to 140 fairly quick...

This is along shot, and I don't mean anything by this.
But did you remmove the plastic on the bottom of the heatsink before you put it on the cpu?

Just a fiew more thoughts....

If it used to run cooler than maybe there is a lot of dust accumulated in the pc, try dusting or vacuming inside of the case.
Also take a look at how the cables inside the case are placed, maybe there is a way to improve the internal airflow a bit which might help a little.

Another thing is, how are u getting your temp readings??
it sounds like u are using some application to do that, check and make sure that they are correct.

Have they always been that temp if so i'd check that your heatsinks mounted correctly

Your CPU is still running too hot, but I found this info on another thread.
Which said that somebody emailed AMD and asked them if 50 - 60 degrees was normal or should they worry about it.
AMD replied saying that they said that 90 DEGREES was fine and that in some cases EVEN 100 degrees.
But if I were you I would still try to get the heat down to about 50 - 60 degrees full load.

Hey, man !!! This can't be the Celsius system.

Hey,

AMD is talking CELSIUS here. Up to 90 degrees Celsius. I get nervous if gets up to 50 myself.

Check the thermal paste. Too much is worse than not enough. Most people I talk to swear by Arctic Silver or Arctic Silver II.

Might want to try a different heatsink.

Hope you get it figured out.

Cheers,

After just cleaning dust from heatsink and power box vents and installing another system blower, my temp is dropping greatly from 59c to 50c ot 138F to 120F. Thats it guys THANKS ALL, also any suggestions here. My tower has no way other than power box vent to clear heat from top of tower, maybe I should purchase a baycooler.... ?

But I have 2 programs to monitor temp.. one v-cool which was reading 59 deg. C. 24deg C. sys temp and hardware monitor which was reading 138 deg F.

I have just found out that V-cool is bringing my temp down, not the dust or extra fan. I rebooted and it reset to "disabled idle loop" When I inable it the temp drops 10C in less than 5 minutes...
Otherwise I still have problems with overheating... Maybe that baycooler will help.

What heatsink/fan for proc? could be you got a cheap set that doesnt provide efficiect cooling...

Got a dual-fan silver orb runs almost 7000 rpms, worked with no heat problems for a year or two.
