I'm a university senior graduating in a few months. I've worked mostly with design and development of databases (SQL, Access) and web (ASP, HTML, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Ulradev, etc.)

I am really interested in getting into tech security, and don't really understand the bare bones of what it takes to be a hacker (white hat, NOT a cracker). I figure that in order to better understand security, I probably should know how to look for vulnerability.

If anyone has any good info or advice, or where I can find some, I'd really appreciate it. If anyone knows of anyone I can talk to re. security, please post back.

I'd recommend reading "Hacking Exposed" and "Hacking Exposed 2". The books cover common(and not so common) security holes in *nix and NT based OS's, and explains in detail the tools and methods people use to gain access to various systems. It's a good read.

there is quite a lot of information at www.astalavista.com although I'm not sure how responsibly they take the subject.

worth a look though i would say.

Why not put your PC's idle time to good use by downloading the seti@home client HERE (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/windows.html) and then joining the Sysopt.com Users 2002 Team HERE (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/cgi?cmd=team_lookup&name=Sysopt.com+Users+2002)
