Peter M 01-07-2002, 07:30 AM Amptron is a reseller, mainly using ECS and PC-Chips gear. The boards are fine and cost effective - no toys, no overclocking, lowest prices of 'em all. ECS/PC-Chips have recently hit the #1 spot in the mainboard manufacturer's total-boards-shipped chart. Although they're very much focused on large volume OEM business, buying through a reseller like Amptron gets you some level of end user support. regards, Peter bmxer 01-07-2002, 12:22 PM ok cool cause i just ordered one from the local computer store...i just wanted to know if it was a good choice or not... BigBlue66 01-07-2002, 03:01 PM Howdy, I've been running a PCCHIPS (Amptron) M810LMR board for over a year. It's been nothing but stable for me. It came with onboard sound, video and LAN. It only has two PCI slots and an AGP 4X slot. The onboard modem and video were adequate. Especially the video, it is 128-bit AGP Graphic Acceleration. However, I decided to upgrade a little. The board originally came with a 750Mhz Duron and 64mb of PC100. I have upgraded to a 1.2GHz Athlon 200MHz FSB, 1.0Gb of PC133, Cardexpert GeForce 2 MX400 32mb AGP, USR Performance Pro, Soundlbaster PCI512 and 2.1 Cambridge Soundworks Microworks speaker system. Whewie! Nice system and she's rock solid stable. Have made a few software tweaks and am overclocking the video card a tad. Anyway, there is nothing wrong with these boards. Make sure you have the latest BIOS and motherboard drivers though. BigBlue66 01-08-2002, 12:01 PM Hey BMXER, Nope, can't overclock mine. BIOS doesn't have the options, nor are there any jumpers to accomplish it. You may have different options on the 830. I don't buy into the concept of overclocking a CPU anyway. If you want a faster CPU, then just buy a faster CPU that's rated to run at that faster speed. Why risk frying your processor just because you want a couple hundred more megahertz? Don't know about yours, but my naked eyes can't tell the difference that a couple hundred MHZ supposedly makes anyway. And besides that, if you overclock by adjusting the FSB of the motherboard, then you're overclocking the other buses as well. PCI buses get grumpy when they have to run faster than they're supposed to. :D Cheers, Big Blue 66:D :D :D bmxer 01-08-2002, 12:58 PM i have read alot about overcloclocking with the fsb but...but i was planning on either changing the multiplyer or the voltage...but i probably wont since i had to save up for a while to get my processor... BigBlue66 01-08-2002, 05:14 PM Hey BMXER, You can't overclock just by changing the voltage. That is what you have to do because you overclock. When you're pushing the processor beyond its rated speed, it needs a tad bit more voltage to keep up with the additional work it has to do. Changing the muliplier is the best way to go, if you are going to OC. However, some motherboards and/or BIOSes do not have options for that. IMHO, overclocking is a waste of time and is reserved for the real hardcore tweakers. However, I do overclock my GeForce video card, so I can't say I am totally opposed to it. :D If I had a spare computer for goofing around, I would probably try it. Cheers, Big Blue 66 SysOpt.com
