My friend is buying a new pc from a little computer shop near where he lives. He has the option of buying windows xp home or professional for it at the reduced price because it the version thats "only for distribution with a new pc". He doesn't want it becasue he has a full liecence of Windows 2000 for his business, so here's my question:

Can i buy the Windows XP home edition with his pc and use it on mine, or can it only be used on his pc? So basically i'm buying the OS and he won't be using it, i will.

Thanx RobUK

From what I understand about the XP licensing, you may be able to do that. However do not let the shop install it on his system. If they do, It may not work. You may also have to do a clean install on yours. Win XP will only work for 30 days without activation. I once tried to install a copy of 2000 that came with a DELL system. I got 90% of the way though and setup quit, saying I could not install it on my computer.
