I am thinking about formatting my HP because it is just starting to mess up. While I'm at it I will swap the 40Gb Maxtor 7200rpm drive from the HP to my Duron system. Is it safe to do this to a HP? Have anyone of you done this to your HP? My recovery cd's don't work!!!! And I don't want it to be a HP anymore. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Thanks

i get to pick on ya now joel, J/k. go ahead and format it if you feel like it needs it. switch the hdd if you feel like it... but remember to use the Win9x disks you use for your other computers instead of those 'recovery disks'

But I'm uneasy about drivers that I might need. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif Sound card, usb keyboard, dvd, ect.
I'm not sure about it. What I might do is format my hard drive on my duron system and pop it in my Hp and see if everything works out fine. If so then i will format the 40gig and pop that baby in my Duron. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif A HP doesn't deserve a good drive like that.

Which HP do you have?
MY 6350 absolutely SUCKED until I did 2 things.
1. Made a frisbee outta the Quantum SlowFoot HD.
2. O/C the machine ONE step, both on fsb and cpu.
My restore discs didn't work once,, err, But I forgot my resolution.. Dang it.
Get back with machine specs.
My HP absolutely flys NOW with the 20g IBM drive, the 2 mods and NOTHING else done to it.
I had 192mb of RAM for a while and found it to be a waste cuz of so many other bottlenecks.
Like I said, it runs great now, and with 64mb RAM.

I have the 9680C. It's a Pentium III 650 with a fast Maxtor drive. I like it but lately it's been asking me for a fresh install. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I'm thinking about swapping my 5400rpm WD hard drive (a bit slower) with the maxtor in my HP. My mom uses the HP now and I use my Duron. She doesn't need an extremely fast hard drive. All she does is surf the internet and word processing. I would like to have a fast drive in my duron. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I have the Pavilion 8570C and oh man it SUCKS. What i did was format my hard drive, installed Windows 98 SE (NON-HP version!), and it works good now. I have the special keyboard so i just popped in the HP Application Driver cd and installed just the HP Keyboard drivers. Video is a little messed up though, dont think i picked the right monitor. Anyways, in the future i plan to get a new mobo and a new power supply (might as well get a new case too huh?) and make it NO HP at all. Anyways, if i do this in the near future i will keep you all updated on to how it will be.

Ok I formatted my HP's hard drive and put it in my Duron and I love it. Now I put the 10Gb western digital hard drive in my HP and I have it up and running better than it ever has. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Now I have to install the multimedia keyboard and the burner software. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif I know that there is a registry entry that HP puts in there but I don't know what it is. If I just open it up the application recovery cd in explorer I get all these compressed files so the only way is to get my regristry fixed up to be able to use these cd's. Can anyone help me? I do have a HP and the recovery cd's but I just hope that asking for a way to use them is not illegal. If it is I guess I'm out of luck on this one. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif But who would want to get the software off of that cd anyways? It's all software for hardware that comes with each HP Palivion Desktop.
Thanks,
~Joel

Did ya use the Recovery CD's ?
Is the burner a part of the original machine ,, ?
To heck with the multimedia portion of the keyboard,, just use it as a standard board and forget all those cute little "internet" keys and stuff.
I run a $39.00 kbd on my hp and it works just fine,, I also un-check the HP multimedia keyboaord driver in "msconfig".
The drivers for all your stuff,, (if you ran the recovery disc) will be in " C:/Windows/Options/cabs "
Well, at least thats where they are on mine..
let us know,,
btw, the HP mobo is supposedly "tattoed" with some HP stuff to make the "recovery" disc work..
I'm not so sure,, it seems as if one time I ....
oh well, nevermind about that.. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Yeah I need to know how I can use those recovery cd's. Is it a registry entry that needs to be put in? I need to use the recovery cd's because I want to load up some drivers.
Thanks,

I also have an Hp pavilion, and I was told that it is really hard to upgrade, because the HP guys dont like you messing with "their" computers. I want my computer to be upgraded, but I want a second opinion. Can anyone help me?

Pavillions come with all kinds of motors..
Which one do you have, mine has a AMD k6-2 333 which I o/c'd ONE step to a 366 and the fsb from 66 to 75 and it FLIES..
It really runs great now,, oh, I forgot, I added a 5400 rpm IBM ata 100 drive which the HP mobo runs at 33mhz and this helped too.
The original quantum slowfoot drive was indeed a bottleneck.
HP's are OK, not Great but they are OK.
