Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : file and print sharing w/ a router for w98 & W2k
Can someone help w/ setting up file and print sharing. I have two computers properly connected to a router. A desktop w/ w98 and a laptop w/ w2k pro. I am able to use internet connection on both. I've enable file and print sharing on both. I've shared my "D" drive on the desktop. I am able to see my desktop when I click on "computers near me." I get the following error: \\computer not accessible. Network path not found.
What's the deal.

Have any firewall softare on the laptop? Are you logging on to the 98 machine with the MS networking client? Hitting cancel or using the windows logon or no logon at all would cause this error.
not sure. when the w98 computer boots up, the logon prompts w/ default user and i just hit enter (no password). No firewall software installed on either, just using the router.
yes, i do have client for ms networks enabled.
Still not working. Should I have shared level access or user level access or does it matter?

Shared level access is fine.
As for the inaccessible -
You need to have an account on the 98 machine with same username and password as the one you are using on win2k.
Alright, that doesn't seem to be working either. I'm not quite certain I'm setting up the account correctly. I went to cntrl pnl...users...add new user w/ same name as the one I use on the laptop. Same password too.
On W98 machine I can only see itself inthe network. The W2k laptop can see both on "computer near me." Laptop still gets the same error msg: "network path not found," when attempting to access the desktop.

You've probably checked these things but -
Both computers do have the same workgroup, right?
what brand of router is it?
are you using DHCP or Static IP with the router?
Are you able to ping both ways?
Did you logon to the 98 machine with the *profile* that was made to match the profile in the win2k machine?
I have the same setup as you - a laptop with win2k and desktop with 98 and it worked relatively easily.
Both computer are set for the same workgroup.
I have a Linksys wireless etherfast router & 4 port sw.
Both computers are hardwired for now.
I have a static IP set for the router.
Both computers are set to "automatically detect settings"
Yes, I can ping both ways.
Login? I think so. I have Client for MS Networks selected. Shared level access, and "logon and restore network connections" selected under Client for MS Network properties.
The laptop w/ w2k works fine at work, so I think the problem lies with the desktop running 98. That's my guess at least.
P.S. My buddy just found out he's having the same problem w/ XP & w98, and he knows allot more than I. :o(
