I bought Norton Utilities 2001 for my win2k and NT systems (but used it on a win98 system too). When I run the Speed Disk defrag utility, it literally slows things down. It gives no options to select the way to defrag (name, space, or date etc), and makes my hd work much harder than my other defrag program, even worse than the win98 standard defrag results.

That's very odd but please forgive this stupid question.
you aren't trying to aggressively use the machine while running Speed Disk, are you?

nope. I think it its not as thorough and concise as other programs, it finishes much faster and I think it simply does less, which makes things worse. I run one of the other defrag utilities and get the hd speed back.

Hi jjsole
If I am understanding you correctly: If you are just wanting a good disk defragger for W2K, I'm having good luck with Diskeeper (http://www.executive.com/diskeeper/diskeeper.asp) .
If there's nothing "wrong" with your system and you perform Scandisk beforehand, you might want to give this one a try.

Thanks, socalgal. I bought this Norton Utilities because it is the first version that supports the nt/2k platform, so thought I'd give the defrag a try of course. The package is helpful in a few other areas, but for defrag I'm going to stick to O&O. I tried Diskeeper lite once and it couldn't defrag my small crowded partition ("not enough room" error) but O&O could. It may be better now.
btw, with diskeeper, do you know if you can specify which files to put at the beginning/end/last, as well as sort by name/date? O&O can do the sort but not the placement, and I'd like to be able to specify both.
