Internet hangs within about 2 minutes. I've just put this system together (older stuff) and it seems something is causing it to hang up. The system is as follows:

FIC VA-503A (bios JN413) Baby AT Form Factor
AMD K6-III 400MHz processor
Corsair PC100 256 MB RAM
Maxtor 46 GB Hard Drive
nVidia TNT2 Vanta 16 MB Video Card
Creative DVD Drive

According to the installation instructions, the 4-in-1 drivers need to be installed right after the OS. No problem. Once I got everything else loaded (Office 2K and other software) and updated to IE 6, the system hangs when I log on. I'm using an ADSL connection at 256 kbps. Once it hangs, I need to reboot to get back in. I hope this is enough info.

Thanks in advance,

Milgeek

You didn't metion which OS you are using, but i think to problem lies with the OS and the graphics drivers. Maybe you can download the latest drivers for your graphics card.

I think the latest one is the 23.11

:p

Duh,

I'm using Win 98SE (clean install). The video card is an AGP adapter, I'll look for an updated driver. Thanks for the reply

I've updated the driver to 23.11. Still hanging up. I even tried reloading the 4-in-1 drivers that came with the board. Still no positive results. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Somthing else to look at is the DTR drop time. I had something SIMILAR to this (connection would work for a few minutes or 10 or 30, then stop responding) and I went round and round with my ISP. I found something on a competing ISP's site in my area while I was looking for a new ISP.

It pointed me to a site with init strings (have tried literally HUNDREDS) and a setting I hadn't seen used before (S25). The S25 register sets the amount of time it takes for the DTR to drop. By default, my USR modem has this set at 20. By adding S25=40 to my init string, the problem cleared right up! And best of all - it's FREE! See http://modems.rosenet.net/ and check for init strings for your modem.

It's worth a shot because it's FREE!

Good Luck!

Yes but if he is getting into the network - and only there for a minute of two - is it a handshake problem - or configuring the network probl?

my .02 cents -? and a question becuase I don't use it - thanks wiz

Try moving your NIC card to another PCI slot. It could be conflicting with the AGP card...even though nothing shows up..

Thanks for all your inputs. First, I'm using an ADSL modem, so modem strings won't help. No NIC either, modem uses USB connection. Also, unfortunately, I only have one ISP in this country (Bahrain). All worked well before I installed this motherboard. It must be a tweak I've missed somewhere, cause everything else (other software) works great! Only the internet connection is giving me fits. I'm sure it's something simple, just haven't found it yet. Thanks again for your suggestions!

Hey all, found out what the problem was. I'm using an Alcatel ADSL modem. VIA chipsets don't work too well with them. Found out the USB error correction needs to be disabled in Windows and disable PCI MASTER READ CACHING in your BIOS. If there is no option for that, get the patch for it at

http://www.networking.tzo.com/net/software/readme/vlatency_v018_readme.htm

After doing that, system runs fine! You can read all about it at

I'm a happy camper now :D
