I'm working on a computer for a friend that constantly pops up the "Illegal operation and will be shut down..," message. I ran the 98 utility Scan Disk but it doesn't seem to kick in and finish the job.
I think this message keeps pooping up due to a faulty ram chip (he has pc100 64 megs)
Any thoughts?

Try running Scandisk in "Safe Mode"
Also make sure your screen saver is set to none.

Need a little more info from ya, Nomadd. Can you let us know what exactly is being run on the system when this happens? (ie. what programs, internet, printers, and other tasks open when you hit crtl-alt-del, and also if it gives a specific file that is at fault) That will help to nail down the problem. There are a few more utilities you can run from windows, such as System File Checker (it will help replace faulty files), even Dr. Watson (will check through win.ini and system.ini). These can be found in the system information which is in your start menu under accessories and system tools.

There are NO programs runing when this message comes up!! LOL http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
Also, the suggestion regarding the screen saverset to none was a good one.
The message "illegal operation.., just keeps appearing out of no where. I belive that I had read awhile back that this message is usually the result of programs trying to "share" the same memory space in ram. Thats why I indicated that it might be a faulty ram ship. There is currently one pc100 4 meg on the board.
Anymore thoughts guys or gals?

BTW, Mr. Goodbyte, good question;
We are having trouble installing a cannon printer. The message comes up when we try to intall the drives. Also, when Office 2000 is runing BEFORE we tried to intall the printer, it was also giving the message (but no file name to it) AND, it sometimes calls-up the free ISP softwarewe have intalled on it for no reason! When we exit the ISP program the comp called up, it again reads "illegal op..,"
Thanks
