I'm looking at setting up several web pages as a business venture. What I'm wondering is if I wanted to host them on my owen server, what type of connection would I need? dose it have to be a T-1 or above or could I use a High speed version of DSL? such as 1.1 or 1.5 ...I know DSL 1.5 is the same speed as a T-1 line but can you run a server off of it?
thx

It all depends on what your ISP of your DSL line allows. If they allow Server services then Yes you can run it just fine will DSL. What kind of Upload speed do you have? DSL is available with different speeds for Downloading and Uploading. For Website hosting you will want a fairly fast UPLOAD speed and will need a faster and faster upload speed as you get more and more hits

well right now I'm cable 1.5/400 but I know the cable wont work...but I'm close enough to get the high speed DSl connect such as 1.1/1.1 or 1.5/1.5..but I just wasnt sure if I could run a full time server off of a DSL line..

if they allow servers and give you a static IP then you are good to go

Even if they don't give you a static IP, you may still be able to host a server.
I am right now hosting a LAN server using Xitami Web Server. It's great! (And free!) It doesn't slow down the CPU while running at all and hasn't caused ANY problems at all (that is, none of my friends that are on the LAN have complained about ANYTHING). You might want to check it out. Just go to Xitami.com (http://www.xitami.com/) .
I've also heard of a few others that are pretty good. One of which is Sambar ( Sambar.com (http://www.sambar.com/) ), a good software program. It's a bit easier to use than Xitami, but has a couple less features (not sure of what, though). It is again, free. And for a dedicated FTP server (which, by the way, is included with both products above), try Cat Soft (http://www.cat-soft.com/) . It costs $5 and comes with great features, like support for anonymous FTP, secured directories, and unlimited user accounts. So, check out that as well.
And then there are many others out there that are even better than these free ones, but they cost money. If you're willing to shell out some bucks, then the best software you'll ever find (PERIOD!) is Apache. Apache.com (http://www.apache.com/httpd.php3)
Just look around if these don't sound good.
Also, regarding what I said about not needing a static IP. Go to Dynamic DNS Network Services (http://www.dyndns.org/) and sign up for an account there. It just runs on your server in the background and everytime you log onto the internet, it sends your IP to your (Secure) server. As set up, if your user name there is Bob, then when people go to Bob.dyndns.org, it'll go to your server. You can also set it up so you can have a REAL web name (like www.somesite.com (http://www.somesite.com) or whatever).
hope this can help!
