defrag

hi all, why wont my h/drive defrag, when i start it ,it gets up to 3 percent and no more,im on windoze98 please help, cause all it does is keep starting to defrag the n gets no further than 3%

If it goes:

Then something is accessing the drive and is changing the contents. Normally in this situation, you'd see something like:

"Reading drive contents..."
"1%"
"2%"
"3%"
"Drive contents changed - Restarting..."
"Reading drive contents..."
"1%"
"2%"
"3%"
"Drive contents changed - Restarting..."

But if all you see is:
"Reading drive contents..."
"1%"
"2%"
"3%"

Does it look like your PC is hung up or Defrag is hung up?

If it keeps restarting because of changed contents, make sure nothing is running in the background (like your e-mail client, Motherboard Monitor, firewall, etc.). You should be sure to pause, exit, or close anything not needed when you defrag. A lot of people will kill all the tasks except Explorer and Systray in the task list (via CTRL-ALT-DELETE), and close all icons in their system tray.
