Confusion.
Small business wants me to alter their HDD into a partitioned setup. Currently C:/ is all there is. When they bought the computer their supplier didn't consider there being any problems.
While basics are on CD (eg, win98), there is one program that is part of the business that we can not get a pre-installed copy of. (And I have been trying to just get a responce from them for the last 6 months)
Question:-

Can I cable their current data, 900 megs worth, to another system or burn it to cd, partition their drive then cable that data back to c:\ and have it still run as normal or will I have to reinstall the lot from scratch??

My Crystal Ball(s) tell me ... You would need some form of Partition software to create a partition whilst maintaining the software that is currently on the drive, The general consensus at SysOpt seems to favour Powerquest's "Partition Magic". Which does the job well (apparently).

You will need the following ideally:

PowerQuest’s PartitionMagic V7 (optional but very handy if you can afford it)
PowerQuest’s Drive Image V5
Go for the PM & DI bundle if it is available.

CD-RW device

Another HDD would be nice as a dedicated storage device, otherwise, the CD-RW device will do.

Do the necessary reading before making your choices.

Thanks for editing Richard.

You don't need to remove the programs if you use Partition software, like that mentioned in the above reply, you can partition the drive and move the partitions as you like.
But I would recomend backing up to a second hdd\cd-rw for security, If the hard disk fails all partitions and information held within could well be lost.

I would make an image of the program that you can't obtain another copy of just to be safe... There is a drive image program out there made by the same people who make Partition Magic..

If you parallel cable the program from one to the other you run the risk of losing the proper registry settings..

I would definately image the drive before attempting to partition.. just as a precaution..
