Would like you opinions (and direction to a good description/tech reference) for the real performance comparisons between the 2xUDMA/100 interface and the UDMA/66. I need to learn if the drives are cross-compatible of not (with performance hits obviously) etc. You thoughts.?
Thanks,
Lee

From what I've heard and seen most HDD's don't transfer over even 33mb/s! Regardless of what their transfer speeds are on the spec sheet. What do you plan on using this system for? If you're going to be doing a lot of work with graphics, this doesn't mean games, then I would say go for the 100. If you're just doing games and other stuff then you definitely don't need it.

The 100 interface is backwards compatable with 33 or 66 drives. However, if you want to use a 100 drive on a 66 interface, you will most likely need a program to flash your HDD's bios, to set it to transfer at 66. I don't know if you can do this with just any drive but I do know you can do it with Maxtors.

I'm pretty sure the drives are backwards compatible too, I use an UDMA66 drive on a UDMA33 motherboard.

yes they are backward compatibe...but if you use a ata100 drive on a ata66 controller you wont get any incrase of speed compaired to a ata66 drive...
