I just purchased an Acer 8432IA cd writer a few days ago.

I'm running Windows 2000 on my computer, and bought this particular cd writer b/c of the price and b/c it was supposed to be compatible with Win2k. I installed the cd rom on the second IDE chan as master along with my already installed DVD (as slave). Windows 2000 detected it correctly, so I proceded to install the Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.02a software. Everything went fine but once I was requested to restart, I have not been able to access either CD-roms. Both drives work fine in DOS (when booting to a Win98SE startup disk) and both are detected in Windows2k. However, beside both drives under Device Manager, there is a yellow exclaimation point beside each drive with the following error message "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)" Under driver details though, it does show the cdrom.sys, etc, drivers loaded.

I've un/reinstalled them, switched channel positions (master/slave/standalone) even with just the DVD, but the same message. I've had Win2k redetect the drives, 1st/2nd IDE chan, but nothing work. Is there something I'm missing? I know the drive works fine, but it doesn't seem to be compatible with Win2k. Help! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

i've checked some other message boards and found people with the exact same problem (different drives) but no one offers them any solution. And yes, I've checked the Acer website for updated drivers, duh! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I even updated the firmware, but I knew that wouldn't help.

Have you downloaded and installed the latest patch from adaptec? Should be 4.02 E

I've already uninstalled the 4.02a software that came on the CD. I *would* reinstall it, but I can't even access the CD drives.

Gradius, It would work best for your pic to use the HTTP webserver instead of the FTP for picture hosting.

as for why the drives are not being found now within "windowsNT" has got to be a driver issue. I would suggest starting up in SafeMode and delete the CD's and the IDE interface that they are on from the device manager and then reboot and install them again

When EasyCD creator was uninstalled, did you also uninstall DirectCD?
If not, remove it.

See if the drives are accessible after that.

If so, reinstall EasyCD and then DirectCD. Update EasyCD and DirectCD. If the updates are seperate files, apply the patch to EasyCD then to DirectCD.

If Win2000 was an upgrade from a previous OS, instead of a "clean" installation, you may still experience problems with the software.

Try upgrading the firmware for the drives too.

My first thought would be to completely remove the CD-W, and try and re-specify the path to your CD ROM

One question-

1. when you boot up, and you see the table setup with all the (slave, primary slave) what is listed in there, and one other thing. When you go under My computer, does it recognize the drive??

The problem may be as easy as during the hardware installation you knocked a wire loose, lets all hope it is this simple!

Best of luck,

Michael Morelli

Maybe in the future this type of post should be in technical support. :-)

Try disconnecting your DVD and running your Burner as a single master. Just as a test. Also make sure your burner is jumpered as a master.

I have had no trouble running burners under Win 2000. I have had trouble with DVD players either not working at all or conflicting with the burner.

Good Luck!

DirectCD 3.01a and EasyCD Creator 4.02a are not current software releases and may be giving you trouble. I had problems too until I upgraded to the new releases. MntSnow's posting above might be onto something. Go here for EasyCD Creator 4.02e: http://www.adaptec.com/support/advisor/cdrupdates/ecdc402dcd301recupd.html
Also upgrade DirectCD to 3.01e. Hope this is all that's wrong.
