I've been having trouble with setting up Zone Alarm Pro to operate with Download Accelerator Plus 4. It doesn't seem to want dap 4 to access ftp downloads which there are a ton at zdnet.com. It just keeps blocking the ports that dap tries to use to download with. What ports should I allow dap to use to run properly ????
I didn't have this problem with the free version of Zone Alarm!

Just set the permissions to allow server privileges for DAP and you should not have any problems

I tried that but doesn't fix the problem. The firewall still blocks anything that dap 4 is trying to do. I finally had to set port permission from 100-9000 to get it to operate properly. I worried that this setup will make the firewall useless !!!

Well I thought I was the only one who had troubles with the PRO version.
I had the same problems and more.
I could not solve them.
There where also no extra features witch could please me. So I re-installed the free version.
It is working fine.....

When an ftp client establishes a connection to a remote host for ftp transfer, the initializing host telnets on any given public port above 1023. So any port from 1024 to 65,???(cant remember) could be the initializing port. The remote host then establishes a 'control reply' on port 20, and sends data on port 21. Make sure you allow access thru all ports above 1023 also. this is the issue with software firewalls. With Cisco firewalls you can just specify to allow ftp, and that would take care of everything. I am not too familiar with ZoneAlarm, though I had it installed in one of my systems, and removed it because I screwed it up. It might be able to allow the ftp with certain tweaks.....

Well I think I figured it out. I went into the options for dap 4 and checked the little box to use PASV for FTP servers. I also went to the firewall options for dap 4 and set the port permission to 20-65535 which seems to work better but I still think there is a conflict.

Sysopt has a current article running that highly recommends Sygate's free firewall over Zone Alarm. You might try it.
