Yep! I have that same exact model of Plextor and it's one great burner! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif One of the great features is that it has low CPU Utilization! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Well, Plextor makes great burners... but I still couldn't recommend getting an IDE one. SCSI is so much better, it's unbelievable to the IDE-only user.

Go for SCSI and you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the quick response guys.

Can ya use a PCI OR ISA , SCSI card to run "internal" devices ?

I'm sure this is a rather elementary question, however I don't remember it's discussion previously.

At present I run SCSI-2 50pin cards by Symbios Logic.
3 in all ..

I'm not, and neither will other IDE Plextor 8/4/32 users. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm a SCSI user, I use a SCSI Ultra160 29160N card with 10,000RPM HDD. I also use an IDE Plextor 8/4/32 CDRW. I can do Photoshop, browse the net, etc. while the CD is burning, and no buffer underruns. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm using two of these IDE based Plextor 8/4/32 CDRW's at home, and both do a great job even when multi-tasking. One is used on a dual P3-733 system and the other on a single P3-450 system.

I'm using a SCSI External Sony CDRW at work on my system and that also does a great job burning in multi-tasking environments, but what do you expect from SCSI?? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

IDE has improved much over the years, where CPU utilzation has dropped much to the point where you [i]can[i/] multitask, something that was merely impossible before on IDE based CDR and CDRW drives.

well my plextor 12x10x32 drive came in the day after i ordered it, and it rocks. i don't have any room for a scsi adapter in the system i put the drive in, which is why i went with the ide version but i must say that i am impressed with its performance.

burn baby burn!

i have this drive, basically anyways...its a Creative 8432e, which is a plexy rebadged. recently updated the firmware. worked great before, works great after. only errors are user, not hardware. my two pennies worth

Stupid question time.
Will a Plextor IDE burner boot with a standard Windows 98 boot disk and operate as a CD-Rom in DOS?

Thanks John,
I was assuming the same thing. I have one system that is space limited (no more bays) and replacing the CD-Rom would be the easiest solution. I would rather not have to use specific boot disks for that one system so was hoping that it would use the standard "Oakcdrom.sys" or "mscdex.exe" driver.
As for actually burning in DOS. I thought that it could not be done, but the new version of Ghost 2001 claims to do it. I actually purchased a copy to see for myself, but my current burner is not supported.
Thanks for taking the time to help. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Edit- I can't spell either. -edit

Yes, it should as long as you have your cd rom drivers loaded with autoexec.bat and config.sys files at boot up. However, I don't think you can burn from DOS - at least not without software I asume. Any one know of a way to burn from a DOS prompt?
